Jim, sort of scratching my head as to why you’re getting carbonate deposits with “normal” levels of alc and calc. If you’re also maintaining magnesium, you shouldn’t be getting all this carbonate deposits. Assuming all things are normal, I’m guessing the microenvironment where the alc/calc...
Bax, for a quick fix today, try your local hobby shop. Can’t remember who posted this, but they found that the carbon fiber rod available at the local hobby shop is the same diameter as the impeller shafts. Now it’s not ceramic, but it might be enough of a temporary fix until the replacement...
Bax, here’s my experience with an Atman 2500….on an SWC 160. It is a mesh wheel pump and it was stalling….not completely….but not maintaining a bubble-filled column. I played with nylon washers (at HD in those drawers in the Hardware section). I found that three washers on the mesh wheel...
Steve, either way, you can’t put that rock right back into a tank and not expect it to cycle. You’ll have to wait the customary one month or so until the bacteria clean up the death mess that occurs. You can kick-start the process by adding one of the bacteria mixes they have, like Bio-Spira...
Jim, good stuff.
When you say “make up,” I’m assuming this is freshly made saltwater (Reef Crystals, if I’m not mistaken)?
What is the source of water….I’m hoping RO/DI?
And where does your water come from…..municipal or well?
That alk number is just down right funky!
I can...
Steve, sorrow to hear about this. I know you’re a bit far away, but I have two Brute cans if you need them. They are the thirty something gallon ones. I also have a 75 gallon glass tank sitting empty at the moment.
If this is your second tank, I’d take a real good look at your stand to make...
These numbers are hard to believe.
At those levels, you’d be precipitating carbonate.
Something is not right.
How can the alkalinity be so high if you’re not dosing (either sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate)….just doesn’t make chemical sense.
And high alkalinity doesn’t...
Your test kits will determine how much you need to dose per day….and that will be determined by the amount of sps/lps you have in the tank. I’ve got to believe that with a 72 gallon….with moderate sps/lps….you’re looking at 20 plus milliliters per day. (of each alk and calc), but the actual...
If you go to Hidden Reef, you’ve got to drive around the corner (a couple miles) to The Fish Factory (3021 New Rodgers Road, Bristol, PA…Rodgers Road is also known as Veterans Hwy). Sort of a dumpy place, but better coral selection than Hidder Reef.
As far as Hidden Reef, you can’t beat them...

You really don’t want to use RO/DI water for freshwater unless your tap water is so bad that you need to strip out some “bad” stuff…like high nitrates. If you do use RO/DI water, you then need to add back ions…such as salt and baking soda…so that the fish have the right ionic balance. Again...
I’ve had good luck with a soda bottle trap. The secret is to include a hole in the middle of the bottle that you pump food into the bottle. Once the food is squirted into the bottle using a turkey baster, you occasionally squirt the turkey baster to create a snow globe effect.with the food...
