Once the worm gets out of its tube it is pretty much over. Losing the crown is not a big deal, but losing the worm is. If it is connected to other feather dusters, you probably should remove it.

What sort of lighting are you using and where is it in your tank? When you are feeding your corals do you turn off your pumps?

If you know someone who has live sand, you can always ask for some extra to seed your tank. You don't need a full live sand bed to start a tank, just seed from an established tank. Personally, I went to Tropiquarium and bought the live sand there at least they have several different sized bags...
