    Humidity – Glass Tops

This year I’m having a major problem with humidity…condensation on the windows causing mold to grow. A little history; Anderson e-glass windows, no additional humidification, boiler/hot water for heating. Measured humidity upstairs at 67%, downstairs at 53%. I do run the house a little cold…60...

    my 55g

You’ve asked a bunch of questions. I wish to tackle what I feel is the most critical. Yes, you do have to test before you add fish. I’m hoping you’re testing frequently now. At a minimum, you should be testing and measuring salinity, ph, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and alkalinity. Magnesium...

    Stocking Suggestions

I opened this thread thinking that I was going to see ideas for what you might want in that stocking that was hung by the chimney with great care. Instead…well you know the rest...it's that time of year. If Santa reads this, please, not the same as last year…rotten apple and a piece of coal. I...

May I see pics of your closed loop?

You can NOT drill tempered. It will shatter. I think you know that because of your comment about not enough room. If you have a tempered bottom, and you want to drill, all holes must be in the vertical sides.

Need HELP!!!! Undergravel Filter to keep or not to keep!

Well Old Salty, when I was breeding freshwater fish, this was my filter of choice for the fry.  You wouldn’t loose any baby fish into a “sucking” filter.  From a spawn of tiger barbs, I’d have hundreds of fish.  None lost to the filter. With salt, this is another story.  I’m assuming you have...

does it look like my cycle started yet

My suggestion would be to do a search on cycling a saltwater aquarium to get a better idea of what needs to happen.  It takes (while waving my hands in the air), 2  -  6 weeks to cycle a tank.  The measure of when it is done is by testing for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.  The difference in time...

does it look like my cycle started yet

Isn't this a little scary? I would venture this would cause a spike as well from the killer chill.

does any one know glass or acrylic tank builders in nj?

Don't have first hand knowledge, but FENG of Red Sand Aquariums in Dunellen has been mentioned as a good builder.

    Let's Get Ready to Re-Scape

The impact of heavy metals on reef viability has been extensively studied.  Amounts of some heavy metals in the ppb range (that’s a b for billion, or mg/l), have caused growth problems and death to corals. Would you throw a penny into your tank.  I hope not, because we all know that at very low...

    Rose bubble Anemone

If the lights go out suddenly (power failure or blew a circuit), the RBTA freaks out by either getting real big or real small. If you are just shutting down big lights to darkness, that’s normal. I go from shutting down the four t5’s to a single fluorescent for about 45 minutes before going to...

    Tank temps?

I can only guess…There is a Ranco that is an HVAC company that makes controllers for maintaining heating and cooling.

    Let's Get Ready to Re-Scape

I thought the stuff Ed and Merv were doing at the meeting was pretty cool. I was impressed and plan on getting some “dead rock” and playing around with this myself. To answer your query ReeferNet, the hangers are not the metal kind. The ones Merv and Ed used are the plastic kind. My concern...

Need to borrow a 6' auger Toms River area

The trap in the toilet is the smallest diameter. I can only guess that whatever went in is small enough to get past the trap, but heavy enough to rest in the 3” below. I have a conventional snake, but Sayreville to Toms River is a bit of a trip. I’m sure you’ll find someone closer. Best of luck.

Need to borrow a 6' auger Toms River area

I think you mean a snake. (EDIT TO ADD...my mistake, also called an auger. Sorry.) If a snake doesn't work, whatever fell in is most likely still within the trap/siphon portion of the toidy.  I'd empty the water, disconnect the water line (first turning off the water), and pop off the two nuts...

Holiday Lighting – What are You Hanging?

With the holidays here, it’s especially hectic to get everything done. Between tank maintenance, there is no time to do all the shopping, decorating and hanging holiday lights. Here’s a photo of some poor guy who got-r-done hanging the lights. “Honey, did you hang the lights?” “Yes dear.”

    bloated anthia

First thing, if you have a funky looking fish, get it into a quarantine tank. I’m actually more a freshwater person, so take this with a grain of salt. Is the fish swimming ok…swim bladder conditions cause for abnormal swimming especially going up and down. If that’s ok, then I’d guess...

    AQUAPAWRIUM

I actually send a letter to the company a while back on this store.  Every salt fish was either dead or near dead.  No one in there right mind would buy any of these fish.  What gets me is that if I kill a rat in my backyard with a shovel, I get a $3000 fine and go to jail...yet they can kill...
