You have to prime them and then they will fill with water sending air out the outtake. Once its filled with water then you turn it on and it moves the water through it. I assume it pumps the water out creating a need to fill the empty space with water which keeps the flow going

to add to Marcus's statement I personally like slip better than threaded. I can never get the threads tight enough to prevent leaks. Dry fitting is def key.
