Welcome aboard! The diatoms thing is the norm. It’ll look terrible for a couple weeks. Use a turkey baster to blow off the rocks and change out your filter material often. I re-scaped a tank about 8 weeks back and I’m just getting out of ugly phase now.

So I made some ‘platform’ scapes out of cut rock and I’m loving it. Each piece has 12-15 platforms for sps placement and plenty of flat spots below for shrooms and zoas, plus theres tons of floorspace as well. Also, picked up the Coralife Nano Skimmer. Dont think I’ve ever seen a skimmer...

Had a spotted in a smaller tank, 40g. I dropped in a pod pack every 2 months or so to top up population and it survived for about 5-6 years.
