Having a bigger skimmer is generally the rule of thumb. It lets you stock the tank how you want, not what your skimmer is rated for. You don't want to go TOO big like a skimmer rated for 500g but where you are, that would be a good skimmer. I have a reef octopus skimmer and am really happy...
To simplify things:
Pros for ground probe: You don't get electrocuted
Cons fro ground probe: If something is leaking electricity into the tank, it will continue to do so which can crash your tank.
If you have all GFCI you should be fine, also who doesn't love a little tingle when their hands...
While I was at the Giants game on Sunday, Nikki did some prelim scaping with the rock we had on hand. This is not the final amount of rock and we will be adding more reef rock to fill in the back a bit. We cherry picked this rock over the course of several months, pretty much all of this came...
Did you also test the water once it has gone through the RODI unit?
If that 5g of water has high phosphates, chuck it. The point of doing water changes is to dilute bad things, not add more to the tank. Phosphates can be dropped several ways. Dilution through water changes, adding some sort...
Generally diatoms feed off of silicates, hence why they are present in a newly setup tank. Generally they will did off once/if the source of silicates is taken out.
We ran the RO unit pretty much non stop and filled up everything we could, but we had fish and corals in the system in the recirc tank so we could not dump in any fresh water to the system. All the water had to be salted, which made it tougher. We had to fill the 85g frag tank and 205 display...
It went very well Ed. Here are some pics:
Here are the guys from Elos shimming the stand so everything was level.

The tank with the light rail hung:
As you can see there are no doors on the stand right now. When it was...
I have never built a sump so I can't really help you there. For my 57g that I just broke down, I used the eshops medium sized sump which fit well and left me a little extra room to get some things down there. It was only 2 seciont so no fuge.
Skimmer wise, a lot of people including myself...
Even though my wife does our aquascaping, I will try and share some tips.
1. Understand the size of your tank and where any limitation will be. Remember you have to clean the glass and give yourself room accordingly.
2. Keep flow and dead spots in mind. Where are your powerheads and returns...
One of the first corals I ever bought for my 12g was a single head of dendro back in roughly december of 2008. It survived a tank crash where the temp of the tank dropped to around 55 degrees. It has always been one of my favorites.
Here is what it looked like around when I bought it...
