When I did lab tests with mice and rats - we were breeding dozens of them in a short period of time. A single female could be used 2,3 times a year to get a litter. It was easy and it's no wonder rats are used all over the world for testing.
I don't think you can compare rats with starfish...
yes - it works and dump the fluval unless you're running it exclusively with carbon/gfo. The fluval (and any cannister) can become a trap and may actually be creating more nitrates/phosphates to be released back.
I would sell maybe 30# of LR to help clear out space. You've got a nice Deep Sand Bed - and there's plenty of LR in there I think to help manage ammonia/nitrite and to a degree nitrates. The removal of some LR will help in that it will allow more flow and reduce the amount of detritus trapped in...
as far as i know- tuxedo blue urchins are supposedly excellent at coralline removal...as long as you don't mind the rather haphazard way they go about it.

Good luck finding these - i don't think I have ever seen one at any of the LFS.
I was able to get one from dflint when he left the hobby - though I think my "razor" is actually made of plastic.
The production of these has ceased for some time. We'd have to convince the creator to re-start. Don't count on it...I know he's been super busy.
work near warren - closest LFS are Red Sand in Dunellen and OG II on route 22.

You make a great point (collection of wild anemones is another topic we could talk about)- but on this topic - I don't see people comparison shopping between percs and picassos. That's like comparing a lease of a toyota corolla versus a lease of new BMW hybrid that's like $835/month for a select...
I love great debates - and this one is shaping into an interesting discussion.
First off:
