It has a dual sensor that has an optical device and a float valve as a backup.
Unfortunately the tunze oz is pricey relatively speaking.
I can sympathize with candi - I used have a few mantis shrimp (the smaller kind from the gulf of mexico with hammers/not spears) and had to use the "take the rock out / pour water into burrow" technique.

I'm not so sure I'd put live sand in a fuge unless I knew there would enough diversity in the sand to avoid it becoming a nutrient sink. Pods would be perfectly happy in the chaeto and rubble. Most of the worms and mini stars that I saw in my sand were also quite happy to be in the chaeto.
