    Source for food grade drums

I apologize if I’m stating the obvious, but Brutes come in different sizes. Here are the two I have….a 32 gallon and a 20 gallon. The 20 gallon will fit into your 20 inch limit since it has a 19 ½ inch diameter (lid diameter). Don’t know if that’s enough gallons for you, but...

need help in finding plumping part

You’ve raised an interesting point about schedule 40 and schedule 80….the OD on both pipes are the same, so schedule 40 fittings will work with schedule 80 pipe and vice versa. It’s the ID that gets small as the “schedule” increases.

need help in finding plumping part

Only $4 for schedule 80? You must have just bought a coupling or something simple. Price out unions or bulkheads in schedule 80 and you’ll need to take out a second mortgage. For the life of me, I could never understand companies or aquarists who use schedule 80 fittings. This is overkill...

    DT-display fuge-sump setup

Simple fix: In the DT you are putting two overflows. Make one overflow, say a 700 gph or 1500 gph and make the second one the same overflow you have in the 20 gallon fuge. This way you won’t have a problem with excess flow. Obviously the larger overflow in your DT feeds the sump, whilst the...

    BRS 2 part dosing

As Jim says, everything is still good…..just slightly diluted. I’m not familiar with the BRS calculator, but whatever it might be….I’m assuming if you input either alk or calc numbers, it tells you how many mls to add to adjust upward. You could still use this if you measure the actual...

    Can someone ID this? Algae?

This is frustration! I never know what I’m supposed to be looking at?? Part of the problem could be that I’m colorblind. Anyway, here are the links I use for hitchhikers: http://www.chucksaddiction.com/Hitchsnails.html http://www.xtalworld.com/Aquarium/hitchfaq.htm...

    Inherited 90

Jim, this is interesting stuff. I’ve always been told that these were spaghetti worms. Here’s a picture of one motoring across the glass of the sump about four years ago. It’s now obvious that these are not spaghetti worms (terebellid polychaete), but are in fact hair worms (cirratulid...

    Inherited 90

Spaghetti Explosion I’m pretty sure these are the “tentacles” of a spaghetti worm. They must be real happy because they are all over my sandbed…..a nice green color I’ve also had an explosion of brittle stars. The weekly sock change usually results in 5 to 10 stars in the sock. Life...

show off my new pair of coral cutter

I fully agree with the rusting thing. Titanium will not “rust.” The bone cutters I have must be a low grade stainless, because I have rust spots on them, and this would make them not rust….and on top of it, look pretty. :joyous:

Sad to see this happen – especially to a fish that lived a pretty good life :(

Sandee, sorry for your loss. It’s amazing how we become emotionally attached to our fish. My first thought was the same as Tony (shipwrecked), the fish died first. There doesn’t appear to be a “death” wound on the fish…..just severely eaten fins. Again French Angel, RIP! :sorrow:

show off my new pair of coral cutter

It can’t be electroplating, in the conventional sense. The hydrogen in water would be reduced way before the titanium would be reduced (plate out.) I’m pretty sure what you are looking at is vapor deposition of titanium nitride….it gives metals that nice gold finish. I’m also not convinced it...

    pumps

Well you're almost there.....your choice with MAG is either a 9.5 or a 12.....they have no 11. :p Are you limiting your request to submersible pumps? If you are, MAG's run forever. I'm on the same MAG 9.5 with original impeller, cleaned only once, in the last four years.

    Fresh and Salt!?

My first recommendation is to get another girlfriend! :) If that doesn’t fly, I partitioned a 75 g freshwater tank and covered the partition with a piece of lattice that was held on with sticky-tack. Now granted, the partition was a mesh material in a frame, but there is no reason why...

New shark species found off galapagos!

George, nothing new has been collected. Everything that was collected was collected in the mid 90's and preserved in formaldehyde. They are just getting around to publishing their findings from those earlier expeditions. All seven sharks collected in the mid 90's were sacrificed.

    Re-Starting my 29g Biocube

I’d stop adding ammonia and consider adding Bio-Spira or some other “instant cycle” product. It will shorten your cycle. Still need to monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrates.
