Welcome To NJRC! Take a minute to introduce yourself

Welcome Sam. You’ve come to the right place. The one major issue with having a saltwater tank in a school is the summer months when no one is there to care for it. If you’ve worked out that detail, you’re on your way to exposing kids to the saltwater experience. As far as adding fish, the...

    Looking for a storage container

Rubbermaid Stock tank…..they go from 50 up to 300 gallons. The totes you are looking at are not made to hold water. The sides will bow out and eventually fail. Stock tanks are made to hold water, having thicker sidewalls and rigid top bracing. You'l find them at farm supply places.

How to deal with unresponsive Gas supplier company?

If I remember correctly you are located on Staten Island. In NJ we have the Board of Public Utilities who are the overloads of all the utilities. I would have to believe that New York has something similar. I’d look into seeing if there is and complain to them. Also check to see if this...

Isolate the fish in a hospital tank that you slowly drop the salinity (hyposalinity)…..do a search on how to do this and how long. You don’t want to do this in you DT (unless it truly is a FO), because hyposalinity will also kill all pods, crabs, snails, inverts, etc. Let the tank sit for the...

    Salt Suggestions

Manual Water Change Method I manually change 15 gallons of water a week. I state “manually” because some have automated their water changes and I’m hoping they chime in. I make RO/DI water in 5 gallon water jugs. The water is added to a 20 gallon Brute garbage can. I have an old Koralia...

    Inherited 90

OK….update. I picked up a coral from Herbie (Thanks Herbie) at the meeting today and had to climb through the window to get to the tank to acclimate the coral and put it in the tank. As I approached the window, I noticed the lights on the tank were out…..I have the Reefkeeper set to turn off...

    October Meeting Thank You

Vilma and Keith, thanks for your hospitality. Thank God there are a group of crazy people in this club who are willing to risk life and limb to go to a fish meeting in a snow blizzard! I hope all made it home safe. Great ocean photography, very nice tank and home and, the best chili. Very...

Skimmer goin' nuts...4 days now. Any suggestions?

Throw a couple Valium into the tank. That should mellow her out! I agree with others...if she can't be calmed down by tweeking her valves, raise her up.

The fans are working out just fine. As far as ventilating the room, right now I have the windows closed, since they have every window and door open, while they sand. I want to maintain whatever heat is left in the room to keep the tank at temperature. With two 300 watt heaters, I’m not...

    Inherited 90

Today we are having the floors sanded and recoated with oil based polyurethane. This includes the first floor (except the fish room), the stairs and upstairs landing. I posted earlier about my concern to the fish tank. What I did was seal off the fish room with a thick plastic film that is...

    Lighting for a 90 reef

To answer your question, eight 54 watt bulbs over a 90 gallon is enough light to grow anything.

    my incoming water's TDS is 847 !!!

HERE is David's Water Quality Report. EDIT TO ADD: Oops! I just saw that this is one of the links Taz has above. Anyway, the report shows that they are already using chloramines as a disinfectant. Also, if I remember correctly TDS has a recommended upper limit of 500. Once you pass that...

Best Horror Movie of all time?

Psycho I was babysitting in the early 60’s in a strange house and the movie started at 11:00 or 11:30….the late night movie. Needless to say, I was wide awake when the old folks came home around 2AM or so. Scared the crap out of me.

How to check stray voltage using multimeter?

Sunny, I believe you are doing this correctly. If it is a “set-able” voltage multimeter, set it to measure AC voltage and a range of 120 volts (or less). Stick one of the metal portions of a probe into your tank….doesn’t matter if it’s the red or black because we’re measuring alternating...

    lowering baffles for new skimmer

If I understand your sump setup correctly, NO, you only need to cut down the baffle between the skimmer section and return section. The other section on the opposite side will just cascade (waterfall) over the “high” baffle into the return section. Just watch for excess microbubbles.

    Beach Cleanup - Oct. 22

Bob (Magic), great job organizing this year’s clean-up. To the (I think) nine adults and five children who showed today, great job and loads of thanks. And for those who sat home picking their nose, to quote Edith Anne, “pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.”

    Beach Cleanup - Oct. 22

I know that girl. I’m pretty sure she will be there tomorrow. Come and check her out. :encouragement: I think I’ve talked my wife into coming…..but it’s costing me. Have to stop for a Dunkin Donuts coffee on the way down and take her out to dinner that evening.
