I've read somewhere before that bio-pellets can rapidly reduce alk, may that be the culprit? I recall reading this a very long time ago so I'm not sure if that was debunked or not.

I recommend the SCA-301 Skimmer for that size of a tank. Ebay it and you will find it. It's pretty much a Bubble Magus NAC7 knockoff, a bit smaller compared but that thing is a work horse. I picked one up for $100 new on ebay, I'm pretty sure the price has gone up since then but probably not out...
