Just an update, tank is still cycling. Amonia is around. 25 on API scale and the nitrates are at zero. The PH is a little low around 7.8 and I am going to add some kalk or baking soda "juice" to bring that up. (haven't decided yet) Tonight i was thinking of doing a small water change and then...

And I know they sell this stuff, but before seeing this, I just knew there had to be a DIY solution

What I have found so far is that I can switch from dry to wet skimming by adjusting the height of the tube in the chamber
im getting this film on that one side of the tank. it may be the light but i am not sure. i was assuming it had to do with the lack of surface skimming. which is why i don't want to pay full price as i am not 100% convinced that i need to buy this thing
