Is that an old diatom (glass) filter??? Those worked great!! Just like those old U tube hang on back with the big black motor filters...sorry...got carried away into my childhood days..lol

I upgraded from a 90gal with lots of corals and fish went on to the 125 built from scratch(ie stand,sump etc) just to lose most of my corals and fish(what I have left fit into a 55) I wanted to give up too,but I enjoy this hobby....or Im a complete idiot..lol Hang in there is what I can say and...

Oh yeah,had a hermit crawl on the bedroom carpet,wife went nuts,although,this was a week later after my sons snake escaped...lol

just a lil IMO and experience,Ive had "copper tanks" with rock and sand,added copper remover and to this day that same tank is a reef tank,no issues,but thats just me,Im also that guy that "added fish that arent supposed to be in the same tank kinda guy :P

None of my tangs eat hair algea :( maybe they are just spoiled..lol and maybe some guys just have all the luck...lol gd luck with yr tang Ryan
