"If you want to upgrade your tank I want you to upgrade my front porch!"

Wait Matt, I thought the title said the WHOLE porch....so I thought I saw your car at HD collecting supplies:

    BTA and SPS

I put an RBTA in the tank in 2007/2008. It went into the tank in the left rear corner. It immediately moved completely across the tank to the right rear corner. Hasn't moved since.

    Inherited 90

What Goes Around Comes Around Back on page one of this Tale (about 3/4 of the way down), I diagrammed the bubble trap I made that was used as water entered my refugium. I termed it the Rube Goldberg bubble trap: It worked, but it was bulky. So I mulled over some ideas and came up...

    tank temp

What size is the QT, and what is the ambient temperature. For a tank in a "room temperate" room, a 250 watt should easily handle a 90 gallon tank. Do you have the heater in a controller? And if so, is it in a plug that can handle the wattage. I had this problem with my 300 watt...

    39 gallon nano setup

What size overflow do you have? By the way, I'm not an expert on noisy Glass-Holes overflows, since mine never had the noise problem. Anyway, give me details of yours and pictures of the plumbing, and I'll see what I can do. The first thing I'd want you to check is to make sure you...

Looking up the sand I find this: Origin: Imported (Canada) That tells me that this is not calcium carbonate based sand....it's silicon dioxide based. You really don't want silicon based sand in a tank.

I've got a problem - Do you have a solution?

I'd like to just add a warning and a bit of advice. Do not raise alkalinity more than 1 dKH per day. If you wish to use an "alk" buffer, I would recommend soda ash (sodium carbonate) over baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Soda ash has a slightly higher pH and is a stronger alkali then...

I've got a problem - Do you have a solution?

You have an excess nutrient problem. My guess is cyanobacteria....and if not that, some other algae. What you are seeing are oxygen bubbles created by photosysthesis. Clean up your water. You can do this by running a skimmer, performing water changes, using chemicals such as GFO and...

    Hanna meters

An X-Ray Flourescence Spectrometer will determine elemental analysis without the use of any reagents. I am not aware of an "automated" machine, so you'd have to figure that out. Out of curiosity I checked ebay.....found two used machines....one for 16,000 and the other for 99,000. Maybe we...

    Using old rock help please

I'm not sure I understand your concern....it's dead rock. The rain water most likely is slightly acidic....that's "normal" rain today. If you are still concerned, take the rock out and let it dry. Either way, you have dead rock, and therefore it requires curing.....at least a month or so...

    Using old rock help please

I'll throw a wrench into this. I never understood this acid/bleach thing. The bleach will oxidize some of the organics in the rock...but most likely not completely. The vinegar will dissolve some of the carbonate (the rock)....why would you want to do that? The rock is "dead" because of...

    Problem with Custom DI Setup

NO! '#@!% I'm looking for a cement wall to bang my head. I will tell you that I've been toying with this for over a year or so. I set it up quite a while ago and tried it....it didn't work, so I made "mixed bed" and ran that until it needed replacing. I again tried it and it didn't...

LED lighting for a 55 gallon (48-inch) tank.

I don't like any of your choices. You might want to take a look at this REEFBREEDER fixture....for $330.

I switched to Tropic Marin getting brown residue

Another great article by Dr. Randy.....by the way, he uses Instant Ocean....one of the main reasons I had little reluctance switching over to IO as well. I had this same issue when I was using Reef Crystals. They supposedly changed the recipe a couple years ago that slightly improved the...

    What the Hoot is This

Mike, it's chiton you're thinking of. I thought that was a possibility, but do they come this small? I've only seen chiton that were considerably larger.

    What the Hoot is This

I’ve looked at my three hitchhiker sites and can’t find this little creature. I’ve only found them on the sides or bottoms of frag plugs that have been in the sand. Most are about 1/8 inch long…found one about 3/16 inches. Here are two of the little buggers on the side of a frag plug.

I know I'm late replying to this post, but if you still have it, I'll come look at your tank.....I mean pick up the pipe. :eagerness:

    Ocean Revive ArcticT247 LED

Nice clean look Dan. When I was acclimating my corals and simply had the lights hanging without a cover, the light fall off in front of the tank was blinding. Do you have a similar problem.....or do the lens direct most light down?
