What I have always been told is that when PC bulbs age they start to put out a more red spectrum which leads to the algae blooms. I don't know why this occurs but there seems to be a lot of ancedotal evidence of this occuring. As James stated, it is just part of the equation of an algae outbreak...

With the Vortechs they have a feeding mode which they power down while you feed. I do this when I feed with the theory being it gives the fish a chance to grab it in the water column before it gets blown around. I used to not turn off the powerheads and it looks like it wasted a bunch of food.
