My kid was into freshwater planted for a brief time and, if I remember correctly, he had fertilizer sticks he used to put into the substrate, and ran some sort of CO2 bubbler. When I had freshwater, the plants got nothing but fish poop and whatever light.

Kevin, do you even need to put additional 2X4’s in the stand….which will now take up room. I’m thinking that you can grab the horizontal 2x4’s on the top and bottom of the stand to attach the light rail.

I speak in general terms, knowing nothing specifically about nitrifying bacteria. Most bacteria will go into a dormant stage if they do not have the means to continue to reproduce (this assumes all other parameters are there to keep it happy.) If you don’t “feed” the bacteria with fish...

Kevin, not sure what woods you are using, but if you use a stain sealer first, the tone will be more similar between the woods…especially if you go with a darker stain.

Well I went gloss black on the big tank (90 gallon) and flat black ($0.97/spray can) for the JBJ 28. Haven’t fully set up the JBJ yet, but the big tank does require a damp cloth wipe down every so often.

Jim, I’ve run both an MRC 2 and MRC 3 on my tank and without question the best skimmer I’ve run as far as skimmate production. So good choice with your big tank. My only complaint was the energy consumption for the pump and the noise….very loud, even with the air intake muffled. However...

Always like the DIY woodworking…..looks fantastic. However, I do have a problem with that behemoth overflow…..go Glass-Holes! :grin:

“Pretty close,” only counts for handgrenades, horse shoes and Bocci ball. Otherwise, you still have ammonia in the tank!

I believe I'm at 36 1/2 which is just fine when standing next to the tank. I recently put a couch in the fish room, and it seems a bit high sitting in the couch.....but I'm still OK with the stand height....because most walk in and stare....so it's good.
