Sounds like you have a siphon problem as far as shutting off goes. You need to have the top of the hose above the level of the water where is it being pumped from. As far as the pump not starting that is ???? I guess it is a lemon?

I have had good luck with mine, I put down about an inch of mud, old sand from my nano, and then rubble on top. Have cheato and one mangrove that I brought back from Florida, just for fun more then anything.

I still end up with algae in the QT it is amazing. That is a side note. I don't like to treat with chemicals(I would if I knew I had to), I do treat with hyposalinity. My process which is not perfect I suppose but I have only lost one fish in QT out of 9 recently. I try to match my QT but...

I use lugals about 4 drops...recomondation is much higher like a drop per 20/25 gallons...I don't do it all the time either.

Think to get back on track here ... this thread is about QT not NYA. I personally didn't realize the issue that is going on elsewhere before. You can keep the ammonia way down with water changes, the tank is going to develop some biological filtration even a bare one. The best way to do it...
