I don't want to say all have air but I think it is pretty normal. Filter socks make a huge difference if you don't have them.

I used cutting boards for my base I wasn't too worried if they were perfectly matched considering they were buried pretty deep.

I don't know the exact number...I think it sort of depends on the total number...10 would not be bad if you had less of some of the others. The rough number I have heard is one snail per gallon but to me that is excessive. I think if you had 25-30 different snails and crabs total that would work...
