Obituary – Hippo Tang

My Hippo has gone to the big tank in the sky. When I picked this "rescue" fish up about three years ago, it was undernourished, with a thinned dorsal fin and a reticulated look in its skin. It ate and fattened up and acted normal the three years I had it, but never re-grew it’s dorsal, or lost that reticulated look on its skin. I also had a rescued yellow tank and large clown, both missing their dorsal fins. The tang grew back it’s dorsal to the point were you cannot tell it was missing, and the clown still has no dorsal. My guess (and this is a guess), is that bony dorsal fins do not re-grow, while soft tissue ones do.

Anyway, my hippo never showed signs that his time was up. One day he’s swimming around the tank and the next day he is found dead in his sleeping spot, wedged between the glass and rocks. I just wonder if it was an age thing, having no idea how old this guy was.

sorry to hear Paul. I'm sure it was just the Hippo's time. Looks like time had already taken a hefty toll by the time you rescued him. I'm guessing you added close to three years. (maybe he was just “dipping out” in advance of the Mayan predictions of the end of the world)
