Photo taking

Is there a good resource/article out there for the basics of photo taking for the aquarium? I've got a Nikon d3100 that I can't figure out. I breezed through the manual once awhile back. I don't understand what any of the buttons or settings do. I see people talk about white balance but I don't know how to do that either.
