Red Sea Wavemaster Pro

Over the weekend, I was given a box of miscellaneous items that included a (what looks like brand new) Red Sea Wavemaster Pro. Being that I never looked into these and went straight to the Vortech MP40, I have no experience with the wavemaster. I was wondering if I should try to incorporate it into my 75g. I already have the MP40 on the right side and a K2 on the left front corner. Along with the bag of goodies was a K3. I already planned on replacing the K2 with the K3 on the left side. Now though... i'm not sure if I should set up the wavemaster pro to control two powerheads in both corners on the left side. As I read up on this, a lot of people complained about using Korallia's due to the noise upon start up. I had already solved the chatter problem on the K2 with a piece of airline tubing to take up that space on the end of the prop shaft where it takes place. I'm sure the mod could work on the K3 as well.

Are these wavemakers worth the hassle?

I use the ol wavemaker setup and have the aquaclear powerheads in use with it.I tried the koralia pumps and had the chatter noise too.I didnt have any hassle's pretty basic, set it and go.I liked the diversity of the multiple settings on the unit.At its prime these were gd units and its what we used and they worked fine.Good thing is you got them for a great price and you can monkey around with them at no cost.Good luck and have fun

I agree. You got them for free. All it will cost you is some of your time and a minimal amount of electricity added to your bill. ;)

The reviews are pretty good on it. I might tinker around with it later after work. I just didnt know if it would be overkill with the MP40 on one side or not.

SirFragalot,
Do you have a pic of that mod on the K2?
I have two K3's on my 75g and the start up noise is horrible.

Thanks,
Mark

Am I missing something here? I thought the pre-Evolution Koralia powerheads (K1, K2, K3 and K4’s), could NOT be used with a wavemaker function. They were not designed to be turned on and off….not to mention their tendency to start in reverse.

Paul,
I was thinking the same thing but I was more concerned about the K3's turning on after maintenance.
I never had them start in reverse, knock wood, fist hitting head.

My K2 tends to start in reverse once in a while. Not sure about the K3 yet. I also have some MJ1200's laying around as well that I could use instead.

Mark...as for your question on the pic, I can have one to you later but it's real simple. Look at the space between the prop and the tip of the powerhead. Where you can actually see the chrome shaft is where you would put the piece of airline tubing to keep the prop from jumping around on that space.

I'd be interested to see any mods on the K's cause the maxijet upgrades arent fish friendly due to the open area on the faces of the pumps. Most of my blennies became sushi:frown:

So the propeller should be at the back of the pump and airline tube in front?

Look up "Korallia wavemaker fix" and you will see/read some examples. I only did it to stop mine from chattering which works. I'm going to skip using them on a wavemaker though. I just attached a pic off of google that shows just how mine was done but I have less space between the prop and the tubing.

Ok so now I've seen the mod for the K's,I have another question. When they start in reverse what happens?I'd still like to go back to the k's..the maxijets are kind of loud and it seems the white impellers blow apart the pumps.Im currently using the black imps. I will check out the link too and thanks for the help thus far

When they start up in reverse, the water does exactly that. The water gets sucked through the front and blown out of the sides. This is with older model korallia's by the way. Not sure if the newer ones do the reverse thing or not. When it happens though, I just had to unplug it and plug it back in for it to turn the correct way.
