Every thing you said checks out, 8 months is still a new tank, may just be natural cycles working out. Increased flow with a power head may help. Greg

Works for me, my alk always runs high, usually have to raise my cal 20-40 ppm I can not confirm that but I believe that I heard that too, call the filter manufacturer.
