I have used FWE. First time at recommended rate and then again at double the rate. Have not had flat worms for months. I kind of like the idea of using it twice. You lower your flat worm count without raising the toxin level to high.
in the link with the tube higher than the tank, how do you keep the water in the tube and not overflowing the tanks. Seems to me the tube needs to be lower than the top of the tank.
Can you give us water parameters? You mention you lost a few corals and a clam, maybe your nitrates spiked. What is your clean up crew like?

Oliver what you are measuing is your current rate of overflow not its capacity. As Phyl said when you increase the rate of the return pump at what point does it pump more than will drain. This is likley limited by the overflow
