I had a similar problem. I took 6ft 1/2" ID hose. I attatched a filter sock on one end. I attatched a 12" piece of ridgid tubing 1/2" OD into the hose. I cut the end to a 45-60 degree angle with a razor to make it sharp. I started the syphon leaving on the return pump and scraped and sucked them...
God!! You just brought back a memory. When I was a kid living in Queens, we used to go to Jones beach almost every weekend.. I used to get poison ivy alot! By the end of the weekend at the beach it was always almost gone!!

I have an open top, but I have a canopy also. The only escape area at the top of the tank is down the back which I have cut some plastic gutter guard to block off that area.

Or at the very least to have a hatchery that uses tank water that when the eggs hatch they go to the sump area and get sucked in the return pump to the tank. This way every 2 days I would add new eggs and clean out the shells
