    Acan Help

how much detrius is on the sand bed where you had it previously? if it's a "dead zone" it might have taken on some detrius into it's polyps. i have seen this wipe out a colony. it seems they can get bacterial infections from the concentrated crap that brownish/ sand colored detrius is made of...

    need id

if you have a large population of bristleworms, you are definitely over feeding. their population grows and shrinks with the food availability. i've had bristles in my fingers many times and i've ever had them bother me for more than a day.

    Skinny Tangs?

tangs are omniovores and will benefit from meaty foods. i feed mine a fresh seafood mix along with nori. flakes are garbage and really should be used sparingly or not at all. here is a link to a simple fish/coral food recipe- http://renegadereefers.org/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=98

    Fragging Duncans

yes, just dremel the hard skeleton, taking care to leave enough of it for the polyps to retract into. a 1/2" or so past the polyp is fine.

Taking another shot at DIY Fuge!!!!

the water level in the refugium will be the same as the water level in the sump. what will stop the macros from clogging that connection between the two tanks?

    Tang in Fuge?

correction. i didn't read the above post correctly. i run my refugium light 12 hours, opposite of my display. doing this can't hurt, but i don't know if it's going to correct your issue. i can't see how it would. if the caulerpa or chaeto or whatever you have in there grows faster, so will any...

    Tang in Fuge?

again, it's not a nuisance if it's in the refugium. i would welcome it's arrival and leave it alone. all of the algae in the refugium is actually nuisance algae. all algae absorbs nutrients. i would not decrease the light cycle in the refugium. you want the macroalgae to grow. all of the...

    Need Help! Algae Problem

i agree. algae thrives in nutrient rich waters. that looks like bryopsis to me. adding more eating, pooping critters is never the answer to algae issues.

    Tang in Fuge?

i'm not sure about the stressing of the fish, but if i had to guess, i'd say yes. it will be stressed out without a time to sleep. as for the algae in the refugium, that is the whole reason you have macroalgae in the refugium, and not the main display- so it doesn't get eaten by the livestock...

some acans not doing so well when the lights turnon

interesting. my acans always stay the same size. they just show tentacles at night. i never insinuated that your acans were unhealthy. maybe since my acans are in a dimly lit tank and are fully open, it might be a good idea to try to sheild them from intense light and see if they open up...

    quick duncan question

how do they make new heads? they simply grow them. if you are asking how to make them grow faster, feed it meaty foods.

some acans not doing so well when the lights turnon

acans should not retract when the light is on, new cuts or not. i have cut hundreds of acan frags and haven't seen any act like that. you've seen where they were in my tank. i would shield them from any strong light.
