you guys are right. under further scrutiny (seeing it from the other side) it is a cowrie. it came out of spankey's tank. he had a few of them, and now i have a few of them. the "hairs" only come out at night.
could have been anywhere. i don't think it was from my original rock however. maybe from a tank breakdown i purchased recently. it could also have hitched on a piece of coral. ???
i have sps in multiple tanks with different lighting. i have 2 x 54 watt t-5 HO (1 daylight, 1 actinic) over a 12" 30 breeder and i have some birdsnests and green tipped pocillapora in there, very colorful and doing well. they are a retro kit with an advance ballast from hellolights.
i also...
a bubble trap is a series of partitions that the water has to flow through in order to get to the return pump. the water will go over, then under a 2nd baffle, then over a third..and so on. the idea is that the bubbles will dissipate befroe they reach the return area. this usually works...
there are different types of skimmers. all are called protein skimmers, but some use 2 pumps, 1 as a feed pump, and another to take water that's inside the skimmer and mix it with air bubbles. that's a recirculating skimmer. the conventional skimmer is fed by the same pump that pulls the air and...
do some waterchanges with good source water to remove the excess nutrients. this is what algae feeds on. the new surfaces will get covered with diatoms, it's inevitable, but the green algae i'm assuming is from upsetting the rock and such.
a 40 breeder is a tank that measures 36 x 18 x 17. it's got an excellent footprint. that's why it's a popular tank. as far as components, that varies with each person. a 30 breeder is another excellent tank. it's the same, except for the depth (top to bottom) which is about 13".
i wouldn't get the t-5's. 6x 39 watts will be over each 3' of tank. you'll also have to replace all the bulbs immediately because the current lamps are not great.
why are you changing out the 175's? are you having issues?
now they are much lower, but they used to be about 14" up. i don't think thin air takes away much potency. 8 " or 16"....it's not going to be much different. my tank is 30" from front to back. at the time, the only reflectors i could fit and still be able to use actinic supplement was the...
i would like to mention that you should be careful choosing "easy" and "cheap" corals. some of these corals can be quite invasive, and cause you alot of trouble later on. i made this mistake early on with some brownish grey palys. i have since named them "dead mans' flesh" palys, mainly because...
