Seeing as you smelled something burning, I would check the pump to see if the epoxy the guts are encased in has cracked. Have you checked for any electricity leaking into the water?

Are you dead set on it being mainly white? What about doing all the flat surfaces in a faux finish and leaving the trim white?

Are you using a garlic supplement in their food? It won't cure Ich, but it does help build their immune systems.

Glass is made using a fairly high percentage a silica sand. So by this theory your tank itself would leach silicates and I've never heard of that being a problem.
