So the consensus seems to be in favor of socks. If I could get through a week I'd be less opposed but after 3-4 days tops its overflowing and pointless anyway. And that's the mesh. I found the felt were so much worse - 2 days tops and cleaning was more of an ordeal.
I'm leaning towards a -just when I blow off the rocks - approach. My wife hats it too - I clean my by hand in the kitchen sink and carefully remove any pods I spot to feed to the display - that creeps her out quite a bit. I do catch a lot of deteris and my maroon clown has a habit of fanning...
I’m seriously considering removing my sock – I know this is nearly as hotly debated as “which salt to use” but I thought before I decided I would tap in to the vast opinions here – thoughts? who runs 'em? who doesn't? why/why not?
I need to consider giving you more stuff and letting you grow it out - The stag that came from NEVER looked that good. I guess I'm either doing something very wrong with my water or my DIY lights don't come close to yours - looks great...
If I have any say as the OP - I welcome any hijack sharing disdain for those things. As possible pests in this hobby go, I realize they're fairly innocuous but they're all over the place and they multiply so damn fast. Every once in a while I'll hunt them with forceps and feed the snail itself...
My guess is you are correct. I never had a lot of confidence with my "set up" skills but in an effort get more comfortable I reached out the the MTC folks and got advice directly from the reactor's developers.
I have my pH probe for the controller in a makeshift effluent chamber - but not in...
I tried using the Paul/Randy Holmes-Farley recipe for the B-ionic Alk buffer. It seemed to work ok - I think I needed to let it cool a bit more though before mixing it because I ended up with a rather large "rock" at the bottom of the container. With the help of a strainer and a couple pitchers...
Mine seemed fine until about 6 months in I started to notice some salt creep collecting in the drain. It's developed into a slow drip now, about 3-4 drips/minute and it drips right into the sump so no biggie but it does mean that I have to redo the plumbing eventually. I'm not crazy about reef...
I figured since I have tons of unlabeled pics of this stuff, this thread will serve well as an accounting of growth so if there's ever been such a thing as too many pics, I think I'm hitting that now but I think it will be interesting to have something to look back on down the road. I am...
Here’s a month of progress (well in most cases anyway) under the new LEDs - Lots of pics so I’m splitting this up
Purple birdsnest and Green Montipora Spongodes 4/4
Purple birdsnest and Spongodes 5/10
Solo shot - birdsnest
Solo shot - Monti Spongodes from 4/4
Solo shot - Spongodes from 5/10...
I'm a little sketchy about dumping ice melt in my delicate Eco system. But I'm tempted if Paul says its ok I'll give it a shot. Not sure Id know what to do with 50 lbs
Holy cow;
So after 24 hours after dosing the baking soda I re-tested Alk - using the red sea, it was 9.0 and with the hanna it was coming up at 10.14. Quite a change from 5.9 dkH
as for the calcium reactor, it's still going through the controller - hopefully I'll "correct" that this weekend...
What's too low? I guess I have between 1/2 and 3/5 in the larger "main" chamber - the smaller (skinny) one is pretty full. I wasn't planning on letting it get too much lower but I thought I could go until about 1/3. As long as I'm asking, when I add, can I add on top of what's there or do I...
90g display +40g sump/fuge. The media is ARM and I'm running low and getting ready to add so I'm open to suggestions. I got it from a fellow reefer so other than him telling me it's ARM I'm afraid I know little else. Also my pH is far from conventional. I have the effluent discharge into a...
Well within the realm of possibilities. The reactor is a bit undersized as I said but I had space limitations. I spoke at length with Jeff from MTC and he recommended against a pH controller for it. He developed it so I guess I should have listened but so far I've been too chicken-$h1t to go...
