    Merv's lighting notepad:

James, High Intensity Discharge is an umbrella term for a point light source which metal halides, sodium and hydroponic lights fall into. the AquaticLife you linked to looks like its a type of DE halide (also called HQI), and it looks to me they are simply using the terminology of HID to attract...

    Plans for my 210 Upgrade

rich, your frags in the sump may do better on an auxillary tank instead of inline. there's gonna be so much water and some detritus that may settle down there being in line of the linear water flow. It looks like you have valves in your manifold that you'll be able to use with an aux tank so...

    Moving on up...

i believe only the bottoms are tempered on the 75's. a good general rule of thumb for sump circulation is about 10X per hour, just enough so that you get dissolved organics skimmed out by your skimmer from the top of the tank & overflow

    My 65 gallon reef

Nice touch fellas with info! Randomized flow will work best to keep SPS, especially when they start getting really huge and start blocking flow. I find that placing certain powerheads on either timers or some kind of wavemaker will help eliminate dead spots, as well as pointing them towards the...

Best food there is bar none.

whenever I catch a striper or fluke, the fish roe goes in the freezer. I scrape the frozen roe occasionally to give the fish a treat, but it does whack out your skimmer for a little bit. If there's a lot of roe, its good fried too :D PS don't use the flying fish roe (tobiko) or capelin roe...

    Awesome polyp extension at night

SPS extend polyps at night to feed, respire and fight neighboring corals when most polyp feeding organisms (butterfly fish for example) are asleep. During the day, they retract so they are not preyed upon.

    Merv's lighting notepad:

There are many lighting choices available for the reefkeeper to be, so I'm going to give a very brief description of available lighting out there. The preceding is not supposed to be a concise replacement to a good "how to" book, but rather a supplementary or quick read to what's available out...

    The minimalist

It has begun. Here, a concise, in-depth journal of the minimalistic re-design of my aquaria, as it inexplica... Awww heck, I'm only redoing my aquascape. I'm posting it here. So there. Enjoy. More pics to follow. Redesign work to start Tuesday. Current centerpiece went to a good deserving...

    how many powerheads are enough?

for what its worth, what is more important is non-linear flow and wide, dispersed flow. corals do not like flow that is constant, directional and strong (like a stock Maxijet 1200 8 inches from a coral). In the reefs, different currents flow in alternating waves and sometimes in reverse like the...

    Anthias ?

I eventually conditioned my anthia by feeding twice on days I work (before I left for work, when I came back from work), and three times when I was off and was home. Meaty foods high in protein like mysis shrimp, grated shrimp, and bloodworms is what they preferred in my tank, mixed in with...

    Anthias ?

place them in groups of three, five or more. they need to be fed often in little amounts throughout the day since they have a high metabolic rate and they do better this way. They are schooling fish that seek shelter near coral heads and would prefer to have the same security in a tank.

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

I am also contemplating on reducing half the rock to give the fish a sense of security within the tank. A nice open space would be nice, and I may be forced to remove one of my two large efflos to create a more open space on the right. I will be placing all the rock that is removed into the sump...

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

I was thinking about that, but the *&#^%@ wrasses have been making a mess with the pyrex bowl + sand I placed in the tank. I'm thinking of ganking it completely and have them sleep in the rockwork like some other wrasses I've had in the past. It seems like they just like to fan sand around for...
