"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

okay- so the majority says leave it as it is- thanks for the compliments. I still have the itch however, and I think I will go ahead and make some changes, not as drastic as originally planned however. As far as sand in a reef- I totally agree. I went with bare bottom because my corals which...

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

thanks for the compliment Bill, but ummmmmm I guess you won't like what I photoshopped around to see how I want the new layout to look like.... I plan on scraping the back glass so the black background shows again.....

    Moving

congratulations on the new job, if I was in your position, I would sell all my livestock and bulkier equipment (tank, stand, sump), and give a few coral pieces to close reefing friends for safe holding. You would probably be busy during the move and you won't put as much time and dedication to...

    Cooking rocks?

cooking rocks means putting them in a bucket with a skimmer and a heater with no light for a considerable amount of time. weekly water changes need to happen as well as dunking and swishing in new water to relieve the rock of excess nutrients either weekly or biweekly. You end up with "fresh"...

    wrasses

It was sold to me as a pencil urchin. I had to move the longspine since he was knocking EVERYTHING around. The funnier thing (and probably more annoying IMO) about this urchin is the fact that it PICKS up frags and carries it around the tank! I actually have a few pics of this happening...

    Acro Eating Flat Worms (AEFW)

levamisole can be purchased at your local farm supply store. It is used as a pig de-wormer. It is very harsh however, and I found that using FLuke tabs by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals at a ratio of 4 tablets to 5 gallons works perfectly fine in loosening the flatworms from the coral so they can be...

    wrasses

yep- here's the CB checking out some crawly thing trying to get in the sand- and pardon the mess of a tank I currently have- I was doing a bunch of stuff tonight (and the past 4 nights), but I made the captions a little more fun this time- :D

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

agreed. However, it is easier to siphon out detritus in the sump without worrying what corals you're gonna break, or corals you get to move around etc etc. Also, having the liverock in the sump provides a safe haven for copepods and other food organisms for the tank inhabitants in the future...

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

Bacteria grow in the water column as well, on the glass, every surface area they can proliferate. Aerobic for the glass, water column and oxygen rich surfaces, Anaerobic within the available liverock, or where water flow is less. Adding bacteria via prodibio and zeo regimens will account for the...

VSV + Amino Acid dosing regimen

I think it's more or less the same than just adding the vodka. I think you're right. I read on RC that CoralAmino is a bit strong so I reduced it to 10 as you mentioned. Looking at the green cap, it looks a little lighter too..... I'll see if that helps get the color back up on the milli.

    wrasses

half went in the main tank, half went into a hospital tank. The first night, I noticed the green coris looked lost trying to find sand when the lights went out. Last night, he slept in a hole in the rockwork. I know they dive for cover when scared and I had to move my rogue clownfsh because he...

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

Rockwork like that is easily achieved using Zipties, Acrylic rods and some quick setting cement (thorite or waterplug) I am in the process of thinking/designing and then creating something similar to that design to reduce the amount of liverock I have in the system. Reducing the liverock in...
