    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Re: Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank PHOTOS Here's the gramma. Was shy at first, now not so much! Naso action shot. If she's not a blonde, is she a brunette? Other side, showing some scratches. Center tank shot. It's kind of like a castle now: Pavona maldivensis frag Leftish side: Elkhorn...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Dumped their butts in the tank. There were no other fish in there to make sick, both fish were living in the same system, and further holding at the LFS in question would not be a health-enhancing experience!

    fish rehab project

Poor guy...someone call the fish ASPCA. Now open: The Reefsandrotts Shelter for Battered and Abused Tangs Hey Jim, once he's a little better, you should let him stay in my tank for a while, more swimming room.... ;D

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Ha ha, no offense taken. The gramma is so small, and the tank is so big, that any photo will be blown up so much it looks like a picture of purple-and-yellow bigfoot. The tang was bought at Honest Al's Discount Fish (We buy second best and pass the savings on to you!) , and he's a little...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Shortened the skimmer outlet today, hoping that cuts down on the micro-bubbles. Making a lot of progress on my home made kalk reactor, I'll upload some pix once it's finished. It's beautiful. The Vortechs work very strangely. They are wireless, but with no display, who knows if they're talking...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Bax: I drew Glasscages a simple 2-D sketch on the computer of what I wanted, and they inflicted reality on it! They called it a "Califlow" overflow, say that and they will know what you mean. They will do whatever you want, as long as they don't have a rule against it. Mr. Glasscages made a...

    cant catch a flame angel

I had to take my rockwork apart. >:( I have since heard that a good method is to surprise the fish about 2 hrs after the lights are out, poke him into the open wit a stick, and scoop 'em up with a net.

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Once my pH probes were properly calibrated, I saw just how much the pH was dropping when the lights went out. Maybe this is a reason my frags have been turning brown. I quickly hooked up a temporary kalk dosing system, a bucket and a kangaroo dosing pump, and started adding kalk. It certainly...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Realized a funny thing today. I had calibrated my pH probe when I installed my Ca reactor, but the readings still seemed funny, very high. And I used my last packets of calibration fluid. So I ordered some more and when it came I checked my work. It turned out I had calibrated the ORP probe...

    blange3's 180 upgrade

Bill-- Are the drain pipes vented, Durso-syle? In my tank I have two 1.5" drains, one is vented, one is not. When they were both vented, they couldn't keep up with the single 1.5" return. With one non-vented, it becomes a siphon that can handle an enormous amount of flow. The other (vented )...

Best Way to Catch a Fish?

How did you eventually catch it? The heniochus has a mouth so small, the hook would have to be nearly microscopic! I saw an ad in TFH for some kind of fish anesthetic (fish dope?) and I wonder if that would have worked. I was starting to consider skewers, knitting needles and poison, I'm glad...

    Here's my Big Office System

Re: Here's my 120 I've done a lot of Heniochus research lately Bill ::). Scott Michael sys the Black White and Yellow ones are planktonivores, but the brown ones eat a wider variety of stuff, expecially coral. Don't buy one of the brown ones. Interestingly, they also like sea urchin tube feet!

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

There was a bad experience with a fish I bought which liked to eat coral. The full saga is here:http://www.njreefers.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=12489.0. My tang died during the process. As part of that, I had to reaquascape, so I think it's gonna be time for a new...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

In interests of full disclosure: I had intended to roof the top of my cave with a flat "shelf" rock, but found non available. Instead I made a mesh of heavy duty cable ties (36") and used smaller rocks. Aesthetically it is good, but the heavy weight caused the front of the cave to droop over...

Best Way to Catch a Fish?

SUCCESS. I mostly disassembled the rockwork on the side of the barrier where the fish was. I only partly disassembled the RH column. I took the rocks out of the tank, netted the fish, and re-aquascaped. The end result actually looks better (silver lining) but I did bust up a couple of my...

Best Way to Catch a Fish?

Very bummed today. >:(. Made and installed my tank divider, no problem. No success capturing the fish, although there's a smaller area to chase it. The major bummer is that my healthy, active, kole tang keeled over and died during the festivities. No warning, he was just lying there, no gill...
