I would think, unless there's a problem, doing smaller amounts more frequently would be good. Do the five gallons five times a week in 1 gal. increments.

I have never tried just running DI, but I would think that you will be burning through the resin fairly fast. I know I have about 1ppm after the membrane/going into the DI canister, and have to change the resin about every 6 months. I can't imagine how long it would last with an input of 90 or...

Great for the tank, where there's one there's others. Usually come in as hitchhikers in Cheato, other macro algea, rock, etc.
