    10 Tanks!

When you get your own house and pay your own electric bill you may rethink that! ;D If only life would stop getting in the way of reefing... :-[

    Makeshift Aquarium

Agreed... make sure you wash the DSB very well (preferably with RO water) and monitor your levels closely for a few days once you add it back to the system.

    Makeshift Aquarium

The problem with the DSB is that if it's disturbed (removing it will have the same effect), it will potentially release all of the gunk that's built up in it over the years. This can have a very negative effect on the tank (mayhem really). If there's any question, I'd either remove it (the DSB)...

    Makeshift Aquarium

I'd be very careful with that DSB. If it's well established and you drop a powerhead or stir it up too much bad things may happen.

    Makeshift Aquarium

What do you have in the refugium? If you have a DSB in there, make sure you're careful about not stirring it up too much. You also stand a chance of some dirty water if this is a smaller tank than they're used to. I'd do a big water change at the beginning of the process to ensure that the water...

    Adding bacteria from the sea

I was actually responding to blange's post with that one... the one after was in response to your post... lol I actually think you have a great tank and love the alternate methods you've employed over the years. I just don't think that a lot of people are ready to try something that is off the...

    Adding bacteria from the sea

Paul, Not to discount any of your methods, and correct me if I'm off base, but I think another important consideration is your overall husbandry. Based on everything I've read on RC, MR and here about your reef, you have exceedingly good husbandry practices in general, and spend a good deal of...

    Adding bacteria from the sea

I'm not really saying it's a bad idea, or that it doesn't have any merit to it. Just wanted to present the other side of the argument.

    Adding bacteria from the sea

At some point, almost everyone goes through some cyano (something to look forward to ;D) but I'm not talking about a single cyano outbreak. My point is just that not all bacteria is good bacteria. The bacteria that lives in our waters is likely not the same bacteria that lives where some of our...

    Adding bacteria from the sea

Wooooaaaahhhhhh.... Suggest using LI sound water (or anything else locally obtained) if you're anyone other than Paul B, and you're flamed on most boards! ??? That said, this is an interesting discussion, but I have to play devil's advocate for a minute. The Atlantic ocean in the NY/NJ area...

    Reefer Relief

All good ideas... keep em coming! Seems like lighting (electric) is a big concern for many, so if people have ideas on ways to save on pumps and powerheads (like the manifold idea mentioned), I'm sure that would help some people. I don't generally look at pump wattage, but maybe if people start...

    Reefer Relief

I have been noticing a lot of people selling their setups lately, and I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the economy. I hate to see this, and so I thought I'd start this thread to see what the real issues are, and what we might be able to do to help one another out, or teach each other how to...

"Japanese style" aquascaped and/or 'minimalist' reef tanks

Funny I was just thinking... I've gotta meet this guy! 8) Ok... good point about the majority of the ocean, but since everywhere I've ever been diving, and every reef I've ever seen has sand... I stick with what is natural in their enviornment! Damn... now you guys have me thinking about that...
