WITHOUT QUESTION
Most beginners don't take risks for the sake of trying something... they do them because they don't know any better. When the LFS swears that the mandarin is eating and an easy fish to care for, or that the carnation coral should be put high in the tank with the halides on...
It's amazing how much we've learned over the years in this hobby, and what the hobby has contributed to the science.
A lot of people don't realize this, but the hobby can and does actually influence the way things are done in large public aquariums. For instance, protein skimmers were widely...
Another reefer brought up an interesting point to me last night...
Not that long ago, the list of "Things we couldn't keep" included all saltwater fish. Clams and all anemones were on the list until recently, and plenty of fish that once couldn't be kept are now being bred in captivity.
I'm...
If you're moving to Texas, you're probably getting a decent size truck. If you can fit the tank and equipment, go for it. (Although, you get more space for your money there, and now that you have a new job... this just has upgrade written all over it).
That said... leave the livestock behind...
The wrasse seems to be leaving the hermits alone, but I have a small graveyard of snail shells in one corner of the tank where he hunts. He mostly goes after the dwarf ceriths, and hasn't seemed to bother my nassarius or large turbos at all.
He does like to chase the chromis around, but doesn't...
As I was reading this thread I thought I was going to be the only one to think this!
They are interesting, and attractive, but don't look like a reef. I like a very natural look and will even let my corals grow into one another. It's the way of the reef, and if one coral takes over some of the...
As I see it, if I get 2 small tangs now, I'll have an excuse to upgrade as they grow. I've been purchasing all of my equipment as if I have a 120g, so once I'm at a point where I need to upgrade I'll just need a tank and stand!
First, check the snail's BAC levels...
No but seriously, have you checked all of your other parameters? If it's just the one snail that's a confirmed death, I wouldn't worry too much, otherwise, maybe lower your dosage and see how the inhabitants react over the next week or so before pushing...
Yep, going to start doing more frequent changes and add a Phosban reactor.
I've actually been following the thread, so in a few weeks when my cleanup crew has become escargo for my wrasse, I'll see how you're doing and research starting it up if I still need to find alternate methods of algae...
Ok, so last night my wife and I were at the LFS and I saw a beautiful blue headed wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum). These are not reef safe. I knew this at the time of purchase, and they won't attack or bother corals, just inverts.
That said, I have now set the tone for an interesting type of...
After reading post after post suggesting the same things in the emergency forum, I thought a post that gave the standard advice a quick review may be useful.
Please feel free to add to this.
Do a water change
The safest bet to solve most problems in your tank is to do a water change. Make sure...
You could also add a small amount of salt to your top off water. As you add top off more regularly, it would creep up to a more acceptable level a little each day, instead of more drastically each week.
Hey George, welcome! Glad you found the site.
Where do you instruct? I started my license then moved and haven't found a new flight school yet. Maybe we can get together and talk Air, Sea and... well Land is boring.
If you don't have any kind of controller, I'd look into that before the calcium reactor. Most people get really tired of tuning their reactors, and a controller can take a lot of the work out of that. At the very least, a pH controller, or go bigger and get a more robust controller that can...
Zoas are generally ok almost anywhere in the tank (with PC lighting), but if they aren't open for days at a time, they may need to be moved to lower lighting or something else may be wrong.
I believe you just started the tank a couple of weeks ago, so you may want to slow down and avoid adding...
No the crushed is just a small amount for effect. The sandbed total is 1-1.5 inches, basically comes up to the trim on the tank. I don't like the look of a BB tank, and have seen too many problems with DSBs.
