Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
It all depends what livestock you are keeping and your approach to reefing.
If you are running an ultra-low nutrient system and keeping demanding SPS, keep skimming.
If you are keeping mostly zoas, softies, nutrient loving LPS, there are many reefers who don't run a skimmer at all.

I'm out of timeout. ;D
Repeat after me:
"Research first, then buy livestock."
Purple firefish are great fish, fantastic jumpers and on the shy side. And when chased they'll find any open hole in your cover so be careful.
By calcium building on the walls, do you mean coralline algae which is...
Nick, I responded to your pm's. My post wasn't directed at you alone.
Aside from making AO sound like they sold sick fish and they tried to hide it, there was the idea that all stores are responsible for making sure fish don't get sick when they go home, and there was the willingness to accept...
I guess I'm a little too focused on proper nutrition lately since I've been on a doctor supervised diet for 3 months. I just don't see the sense of letting them fill up on something that does no good for them. If they finish the nori, let them pick at your rockwork for nuisance algae. If they...
I think the first article just proves someone knows how to use a calculator.
Randy's article is much better.
I'm with Steamman, stability is much better. One shouldn't have to address wide swings in pollutants and drops in critcal elements.
I use 10% weekly water changes and kalwasser in my...
As Mr. X said, don't add anything to your tank that you are not testing for. And as most others have chimed in, water changes can handle most trace requirements. BTW even if you need supplements, you would never use all of those supplements. You have three different calcium supplements listed...
Well I guess I'll preface my comments by saying I spend a lot of time at AO and consider Will, Ethan and Gary as close personal friends. So now everyone knows my personal bias. ;)
With the exception of JohnS_323 and Rbu1 I have problems with almost every comment on this thread.
There are many...
Sounds about right, but I'm not a nano guy.
BTW, plates are LPS not a leather, shroom or zoa. ;D
But I understand you reluctance to post in a forum with all those SPS stickheads. ;)
What kind of lighting do you have? Short Tentacled plates (Fungia) should be fine, but watch out for it's neighbors. They have a pretty good sting and can move around a bit.
Stay away from the Long Tetacled (Heliofungia). They are harder to keep.
I hate to agree with a Red Wings fan, but me too. I use Tropic Marin and residue is not an issue. Having emergency backup gives me peace of mind, especially when I travel. I also have another 55 of RO/DI and 14g topoff at all times as well.
