my star polyps are growing like crazy

Do you test your iodine levels? My GSP hasn't expanded at all since I purchased it (6 months or si) - al though it has grown out/up (larger polyps). I have iodine, and I have put a cap full in two times in the past 6 months, but I'm always pretty skeptical on dosing my tank. I still need to...

    Sea Cucumbers....any exp?

I have the same experience as you with my GB cuc and I think it's about dead. I originally had it in a tank with a sand bed, but it did nothing but hide in the upper corner of the glass. I did some asking around and I'm pretty sure that I got a filter feeder cuc instead of a sand sifting cuc. I...

    Pruning cheato

Anyone need a handful of cheato in Middletown? I have not pruned in about 5 months and I guess I should. It will probably just be a sandwich bag size. If not, I remember reading that there is a proper disposal of this stuff to make sure it doesn't end up in our oceans. Leave it out of water...

    residue in barrel

I leave my IO water for about a week at a time and I have never seen a slime coat / tan residue. However, I get a thick coat of white powder on the bottom and the thermo. Pump is fine.

    lighting question (t5)

+1 to this setup Although, I chose to swap out one of the ati blue plus's for a T5 Giesemann POWERCHROME Pure Actinic 420nm 39watt. It's actually a lot darker than the blue plus, but it gives me a different spectrum.

    how to stain wood?

I'm definitely no expert, but I've been staining things for years. Again, like you, most of my things are in smaller scales - trim, shelves I built, doors, etc. I'm not sure what you did that you felt you messed up, but I'm not personally keen on reusing brushes for stains. I buy 2 of the 4"...

    Giant crab

I'd take these guys over a raccoon any day.... and a lot easier to catch and it probably tastes good with butter! Pretty cool though. There are some pretty big crabs for sale in the asian stores around me. Not that large, but actually pretty close I believe - 1/2-3/4 of the size.

Got talked into setting up my first tank... 30 gallon

To add to the previous statement - I am running my HOB skimmer just as you are - with a piece of plastic between the nipple and the pump. I find that it is very hard to adjust the skimmer for dry vs. wet skimmate. Your skimmer may do a better job at this, but because of how low the pump sits it...

Got talked into setting up my first tank... 30 gallon

Congrats! They look really good. Don't worry, you will get tired of that clunky powerhead sitting in the tank feeding your skimmer soon enough... then you will need to research a sump and the plumbing .. and then a lighting upgrade and this and that. It's never ending!! It is a lot of fun...

Looking for Caulerpa Algae in Central NJ

You are welcome to a handful of mine if you'd like, but my refugium is only 5x5 so space is tight and I probably fit about a gallon of water were the caulerpa is growing :) Your welcome to some.. it might just be enough to clog up one your inputs in your massive 180g sump ;)

    scraping a new2me used tank

The razorblade will work, but be careful. When I bought my tank used it was absolutely covered on all 4 sides with thick Coraline. I had to chisel it away with water and a razorblade, but I still feel that some of the scratches left behind are from my handy work. If I had to do it again, and...

    Question on Hard Wood Flooring

The laminate doesn't hold up as badly as you think. We purchased Empire (yeah I know) laminate about a year ago and the tank was dropped on it a few months after. I've done A LOT of spilling on the floor and so far so good. The only issue was when the dog had an accident on it and it almost...

    Salt making question

Thanks Phil. I sort of figured that was the case, but I did want to verify. I guess I could have just kept my mouth quiet and dosed with the alkalinity and verify that the dHK number increased as well. It's also good to know that 2.5 to 3.5 is a safe range for meg/l. Considering I'm already...

    Salt making question

Thanks Phyl! This IO 5gal buckets are horrible with large pieces of undissolved salt pieces. Luckly, most of them fall to the bottom and this may have been the cause of my high alk?? I was being cheap and I used the bottom of the bucket water a week ago - although I was careful not to allow...

    Salt making question

Hi guys, What is the guidelines for waiting 24 hours for using newly mixed salt water? Is it 24 hours from any changes or could I get away with a water change later tonight with this scenario? I have had 32g's of salt water in the garage for about 26 hours now. When I first mixed the water...

    Can anyone Help ID this?

If you can tank the rock out of the water you can use gel super glue. I used it once on a big aptasia and it worked well. Just do not pull them out or they supposely spread worse. That said, I may be a special case, but I have had aptasia in my tank now for ~6 months and I have not seen any...

    Beginners corals ???

I can say that Bills anthellia's are very nice ( and free ) :) Ironhorseiv: One thing I just learned, right or not, is that most softies only do well in somewhat dirty water. Meaning, if you overskim the water they tend to grow slower or not at all.

    Can anyone Help ID this?

Just curious... So why do rock or flower anemones spread so quick and BTA's don't? Also, do they spread slower if you have a very powerful skimmer? say a skimmer rated for a 200g tank but you have a 47?

    My experience with nyaquatics.com

I purchased three clowns and some other stuff from Mike a few months ago. I have to say that my experience was wonderful. The fish were extremely healthy and they were packaged extremely well. Not on that, since I was new to the hobby, and had lots of questions, Mike was extremely supportive...
