We had a pretty good algae outbreak with it. We switched and the algae went away. I wouldn't use it, personally.

Mag pumps are recommended for either internal or external use. They are water cooled so there is little benefit (other than space and priming) to keeping them out of the water, but they are recommended for either application. We have used several externally with no ill effects.

If this rock is dry (hasn't been kept in properly salted water) then you need to cycle it before using it in your tank.
