Rob, I've always been a fix-it person. My first car....a hand-me-down....didn't need anything done to it, but I pulled the engine anyway and rebuilt it because I wanted to, and it was my first engine. As a fix-it person, you never forget your first engine. :o
As far as...
I've just finished the chronicle on the issues I had with my two Apollo LED's HERE. Also, as I reported in my Tale a couple days ago, the TauTronics LED fixture I was using to replace an Apollo fixture while it was being fixed, well that crapped out on me....the blues only. They barely...
James, go back and look closely......it's a Picasso of a group of nude women wearing white makeup with a white background....just standing around. Now don't look at it for too long....you'll go blind! :o
The second batch of 50 blue LEDs arrived today. I soldered in the 40 new LEDs and applied the Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 thermal compound on the finned aluminum. I did this by first distributing the compound over the plate.
By the way, one $7 tube (25g), of this compound does the two...
James, if I'm not mistaken, I believe you have newer Apollos that have pots (potentiometers) to allow dimming. I don't have that feature and therefore believe THIS four wire driver would work for me....but that's a guess, because there are no labels on anything in my fixtures. If you have...
Rob, I'm liking that overflow.....it's now my favority after the Glass-Holes. I really like the very small footprint inside the tank. Still don't understand those behemoth corner overflows that are so typical in off the shelf tanks. Just too big.
I also like the view of the garage...
I have read success stories with Tech M.....and it has to be Tech M. Simply raising your magnesium with other brands, for some reason, doesn't have the killing effect Tech M has on Bryopsis. Best of luck.
It will eat your inverts and fish, unless extremely well fed.
I'm also going to assume this is a baby purple, because if I'm not mistaken, they grow to about a foot and a half long. That 28 gallon just might be a touch too small.
+1 This is exactly how Glass-Holes instructs you on installation of their overflow....right up to the plastic trim. Also, I would definitely make a drilling guide out of scrape plexi/plywood/MDF or whatever you have laying around.
I think the link above is a driver that you can dim. I have no dimmers on mine. I think THIS ONE is the closest I've found so far....although mA is a touch high.
Kevin, they have to be available somewhere! I think I might be close with THIS ONE, but it would help if I could read Chinese. If I have the time, I'll do some more digging.
Rob, what I don't get is that this driver has the same appearance in the TauTronics, Apollo and Reefbreeder fixtures I have (and nothing with a label.) You would think they'd be a dime-a-dozen on ebay or amazon, or somewhere, but I can't find a-one.
Led light woes
This has not been a good time for me with lights. As I've explained HERE, I had to rebuild my Apollo LEDs, where one is done and hanging in the tank, and the second is awaiting the LED beads coming on a slow boat from China. In the mean time I have been using an old...
First look at the water level in the main tank area. If it's touching the plastic, first clean the saw teeth overflow. If after that the water is still touching the plastic frame, (and especially if you've pulled out the stock pumps and put in MJ1200's), I'd go to one pump. I'm only...
I believe the most reliable temperature probe is a thermistor.....it looks like a little bead sealed in plastic/rubber at the end of a wire. The ones made with the glass frit (looks similar to a pH probe) can clog with precipitate and become unreliable.
A very common problem with JBJ's is that you are either pumping too much water into the main tank area and/or the saw teeth overflow is slightly clogged causing too much water to remain in the main tank area. Take a look at the water level in the main tank area and if it is touching the top...
