This issue with the Apollo light was without question a heat transfer problem. What also could have contributed to the LED failure was the quality of the blue LEDs.
The white and red LEDs survived unscathed. All the blues on either circuit were fried.
The LEDs were solder/attached to the...
Installed Jan, 2012.....so three years old, running.
Kevin, unfortunately I've become an "expert" on stuff I don't want to know about, and believe I could find a new driver for you for about $15 to get that Blueline back working. It might not be a bad thing because I'm now back using an old...
Thanks guys about the paste....was aware of it, but still haven't sourced it. I'm also having a tough time finding an 80 mm fan....that only draws 0.1 amps. Not sure if I can exceed the 0.1 amp since nothing is labeled.
Thanks for the info....here's what we found.....all but one of the blues measured 3.4 volts. That one blue measures 3.7 volts??? The blues tested for amps measured 550 mA. And there is diddly squat on the drivers....nothing.
Greg, thanks for the heads up but I've already looked at ReefBreeders and when you need to buy a boat-load, I'm looking to save money.
I know you can't judge the biological effectiveness on light by what our eye sees, but here's a full tank shot with the TaoTronics on the left and the Apollo...
Thanks everyone.....here's the latest update.
I've pulled one of my Apollo's off the tank and temporarily replaced it with an old TaoTronics. First thing I noticed was that the corals popped with the TaoTronics. With this Apollo, one of the three fans was not working. Opened up the case...
Michael, fans still appear to be working. These early Apollos are 120W, 55 - 3W LEDs with no adjustments.....you're either ON or OFF. So at 55 LEDs at a total of 120W, each LED is being pushed to 2.2 Watts.
I'm in the process of pulling out one of the units and temporarily replacing it...
Boy, do I have my panties in a bunch!!!
I've been wondering why my corals haven't had that pop they use to have. Well I think I now know why.
The future son-in-law was closely examining the Apollo LED's I have over my 90 (because he believes he can build them for...
You guys are terrible! Well to fill you in, there already is an engagement. So he's my future son-in-law. And I would have been happy if he simply said, "I'll clean those fans and heat sink." But that didn't happen!!!!
Dirty! Dirty! Dirty!
My daughter's boyfriend attends Stevens Institute for electrical stuff. He's off for spring break and has been here telling me how he could easily build a tank controller, sensor devices, graphing abilities of everything, blah, blah, blah, and final got to LED lights...
Michael, you're too kind.....however I'm not the pioneer doing this first, I'm just the follower passing on my experience in the instructions provided. I also appreciate the heads up about IEI in Hazlet. Radio Shack is nowhere near what it use to be back in the 70's. It use to be the place...
I'm a ReefKeeper II fanatic....I have four of them. They are no longer being made/sold but I like the simplicity of the ReefKeeper II.....no smart phone connectivity. You can be an idiot and still be able to program them....unlike Apex (and others) where you need to know some fancy-pants...
I've actually had the long nose since 2008.....and I don't know what the secret is. I've actually tried copperbands two times, and refuse to kill any more of these fish. I just couldn't figure out the copperbands.....and the crazy thing with both was that they ate in the LFS but refused to...
So for some reason my yellow tang has gotten aggressive towards my long nose yellow butterfly. I don't understand...they've been tank-mates since maybe five years, and have lived very happy together. And to boot, I've got another zebrasoma in there for the yellow to beat on, and he only...
And who might accept the liability when some blithering idiot member shoots that laser at a plane. I hate to be negative Nancy, but unfortunately you have to think about these things in today's environment.
Nitrates don't go away on there own....they need to be "exported." Do you have a sump/refugium and are you running a skimmer?
Anyway, if you haven't been doing water changes, I'd start with a water change.
And FYI, nitrite isn't an issue with saltwater tanks. Even so, that should quickly...
