Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
The female may find that her desired nesting position is too close to the sand (hence wanting to brush the sand away). It is possible that they are preparing to spawn, but my female did it alone in a tank, so it just might be their nature. I believe you'd find this is VERY common among maroons...
The bung holes (?!) really put a damper on these for me. Any chance of getting them with snap-on lids? Ok, probably not, but I couldn't resist asking. I'll have to pass at this point, unless someone can help me make sense of using them with the hole configuration.
If you could get a juvi from a known breeder who could ensure that you were indeed getting a juvi, I would do that. I'm not sure what the best thing to do with a 2" maroon. It is likely to be at least male, and POSSIBLE, depending on age and a few other factors, that it may have begun the change...
Corrected my post above. I had said the one you have will turn to male, when what I meant was that the current (larger one) would change to female and the juvi would take on the role of male. Much easier to add the juvi to the tank than to add a larger clown (big problems if the one you have is...
I've always read that you should ramp up your use of phosban in the reactors. Something about the PH blah blah blah, but I don't remember all of the details.
We run one with phosban in it.
How big is the one you have now? It is very hard to tell when the clowns go from male to female, but I was always told to get the smallest mate you can find and that the one you currently have will change to female. My female is about 5". Her mate we purchased as a juvi and he quickly took on...
You planning on hitting the swap? That's going to be The event to go to, complete with 3 speakers, 16 vendors, and lots of our area reefers to swap and trade with. Hopefully we'll see you there!
Coraline doesn't require intense lighting to thrive. While it does need lighting, it tends to bleach out a bit in high lighting. I wouldn't worry about that. Also the purple up may be adding things in large enough quanities to throw your parameters off. I'd check your ca & alk if you haven't...
Put that on my list of 5 things that someone should have told me before I had a tank. Oh... never mind. I bought the one I have because she was making a sandstorm in SOMEONE ELSE'S tank! I should have known that more space wasn't going to quell her nesting needs.
Luckily for us, putting an...
Hi! The good news is that you don't need to add calcium until you have a large coral population. Before that, water changes are really all you need. Never dose calcium without testing for it first. Never add calcium without testing for and adding an Alk component as well.
You could either...
So would you shut down the Ca reactor (and associated CO2) while you were trying to get these under control (since it will be hard to get the PH up high enough while you're running the CO2)?
We're using a Kalk reactor so I can't help you there, but lots of people dose kalk without a reactor. From what I've read you could use any of the above (Dosing pump, iv bag, kent doser). There may be something else going and you'll need to adjust something else.
Hopefully one of our resident...
What's supposed to cause them, Billy? Did it start on your new rock or your old rock? Where did you get your new rock from? Does scrubbing the rock help? Is this something that high mag would help?
Kalk? Works wonders for us. Our low PH was caused by running our Ca reactor which was adding CO2 to the tank faster than I could otherwise get it out. By turning down the Ca reactor and kicking in the Kalk reactor, we've got a good balance now.
I guess it would help to know what your system is...
The bottoms of all corals are typically less colorful than their well lit counterparts from the same coral. That's perfectly normal. I'd suggest a different lighting strategy before I'd suggest changing your bulbs. I don't think that's going to help any.
