Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
You definitely get a whole new perspective on the tank and its occupants when you're looking at it in a top-down fashion. I really enjoy interacting with the fish this way as they seem to really warm up to you that way. I have fish in a stock tank that I could hold in my hand if I wanted to...
Looking back over them I can see that the centers of the pictures look more clear than the left and right edges. That might be due to the curviture of the glass, focus issues or shallow DOF. You should have an easier time taking macros through the straightest part of the glass, but you might...
We have "backup holes" in our fuge. All you need is one stray snail to make it through your protective boundaries and the next thing you know you're overflowing. As divers we live by the "Safe Second" concept!
And drilling holes yourself (rather than paying an LFS) is close enough to DIY :)...
I'd recommend against a bow, unless you've seen one in person. If you're into photography the bow is distorting and you're not able to get a clean picture through much of it. I'd get a headache looking at one of those for too long. Maybe there's someone near you with a bow you can go check out...
We keep 1.5-2" of sand in our tank as well. It has worked for us for over 3 years and I like the look of it. My sand moves a lot due to the flow in the tank and critters I have crawling in it. You've got a while before you'll need to extra flow (while you're cycling) so you COULD wait for a...
Frogspawn will recede by itself, if the conditions are not JUST right. That includes Ca, Alk, Mg, & Trates. My LPS are the first to let me know when my magnesium is low. Sounds more like a "cranky coral" than a culprit, from what I'm hearing.
Pictures would surely help the diagnosis.
Anemone & SPS (hard corals) will do best if kept under intense (150MH? or better) lighting. Softies and LPS will do well in almost any lighting.
The hard corals & anemone will want flow that is roughly 20x the tank volume so for the 36g tank you'll want at least 700gpg worth of powerheads (or...
What type of corals would you like to have in the tank eventually? Do you want/need sand in your reef? What fish will you have? The live rock doesn't need light and when you do get them, increase the photo period slowly as to not rush the tank into an algae bloom.
No supplements are needed...
It certainly pales by comparison to the beautiful waters of the carribean! Vis is generally awful (arms length?) We picked up a few seahorses, some butterflies, etc. But for alot of us it is just an excuse to go under water! Besides, the company's good.
Another thing you could do for the next month or so is to run your lights either late night/early morning so that you're not adding heat at the hottest part of the day.
We typically mix up a 55g drum, which is single use for our system (10%). Sometimes it gets used right away. Sometimes it is covered and left mixing for a week or so before we get around to doing the laborious change (LOL.. throw some ball valves, watch it drain, throw some more, watch it fill...
If you're going to do the ice pack routine, I'd use a frozen bottle with RO/DI in it to be safe, not a typical "don't know what chemical substance is in this thing ice pack". The dehumidifier will work wonders. I know it does for us.
