We've used plexi in all of our glass tank sumps. Hasn't been a problem.
Someone had an issue with choosing plexi that was too thin to support the weight of the water. Other than that, you'll be fine.

If you're going to be investing any serious amount of money in insurance you can use a Crummey Trust to pay for the insurance and allow the money to be a tax deduction now and a no tax insurance benefit later.
What kind of salt are you using? With Reef Crystals we tend to have an alk of around 4 (11.2 dkh) but a low side of PH of around 8. A change in salt may help a little. Billy has good alk & ph readings with Tropic Marin Pro.
I have the Nikkor 105 and love it. Merv has the 60 and the 105 and prefers the 60 over the 105. I think Steve68 has the Sigma 105 (and he seems to take some great photos with it)!
