Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Moth Balls don't work. I can show you chewed up outdoor cushions stored in small plastic sheds packed with moth balls...ruined. Neither does peppermint oil.
The only things I've found that are effective are poison blocks....can't remember name, but green blocks that contain poison. I...
You have to have the Phyto and rotifers ready to go when they lay the eggs. I'd say this clutch is fish food. But if you get a phyto culture going to feed the rotifers, to feed the new babies, you'll be good to go. If you have an active pair, they should lay again in a month or so. I am...
Feed him.
You are right, most starfish starve because folks think they can live off the detritus, algae and scraps in their tanks. They also think that they are algae eaters....most are not...they are meat eaters.
My recommendation is to buy a bunch of clams and freeze them. When...
Mark, I have a 3650 Watt generator from Sam's (cost $300) and that generator ran 24/7 for over seven days during Sandy. It ran my entire tank....lights, pumps, heaters....everything, plus my kitchen fridge/freeze, boiler (to heat the entire house), television and a couple lights. I had all...
Paulie, glad to see you made it through this one!
BUY A GENERATOR....even an inexpensive one. A $300 generator saved my tank during Sandy....24/7 for over 7 days. I actually had to pull it out again yesterday because our power went out. Gassed it up and ran the extension cords, and BAM...
Oh Paulie....at least your damsel is appropriately called a devil damsel. All damsels are devil fish and should only be in tanks with other aggressive fish. If you want a community tank, damsels should not be included. That fish will eventually turn and kill other inhabitants.
When I was...
@mikem is your guy for advise or potentially doing the work
Strip off old decking and check condition of joists/beams....replace as needed.
New decking, consider composite decking....Trek is a popular brand, but they are really all the same. If you wish, you can blind screw the new decking...
FYI, if you borrow my chiller, it's soooo underrated you most likely won't need a temperature controller......just a pump of between 100 - 160 gallons per hour.
Paulie, if you're in a pinch, I have a JBJ Arctica Nano (1/20 HP) (that I'm selling for $150), that you could borrow. It's most likely too small, but it could help getting the temp down a bit.
FYI, you'll also need a temperature controller (if not Apex or similar, a Ranco will do the trick)...
If Paulie doesn't do it, @mikem is your guy... he's a builder and great guy who has done a whole lot for this club.
And fyi, I'd use exterior sheathing for the walls. About the same cost of sheetrock, but can take the abuse. Excellent for garage walls.
My guess is that it's a moon snail.....either potentially euspira sp or neverita sp. Because you stated that it was huge when out of the shell, I'd guess more for the neverita sp.
Best off just calling it a moon snail....too many genius and species.
Paulie, might I assume you or one of your sea-worthy buddies are collecting these out of Jersey waters?
A little history.......a number of years ago we had an NJRC member who had NJ collected snails in his tank. Over a couple years, he'd occasionally break out in rashes, and a couple times...
