Yup I keep leathers, zoas, shrooms and xenia with my SH. What size tank are you planning on? Aren't 54w T5'S 48"? I run PCs on my Sh tanks, but T5's are fine too. I would run 2 actinic and 2 daylight bulbs.
Regular reef parameters are fine EXCEPT temperature. You want to aim for a 72-74F...
No such thing as too many questions.
Lighting is dependent on what you keep with them. Seahorse will do fine with just regular NO fluorescents.
Canister filters are fine, that is what I use on mine. Although I run them empty and just for circulation.
Algae can be an issue with the low flow...
Live rock and sump is fine. Flow rate is 5-7x turnover as long as it's a dispersed flow such as flare nozzles and spray bars. Parameters are as clean as you can get it.
Minimum tank size would be a 29 gallon. They prefer a taller tank than a longer tank.
Wow, Mike. Didn't know you took the plunge too. Glad you had a good experience with Abbie and company. They truly are great people and very passionate about seahorses. You do know that this requires pics, right?
If you don't want to breed then either one will really do. Just know that if you have males and females they will breed. You can go with a same sex tank to stop that though.
Unfortunately the only breeder of CB pipefish is in Australia at this time. Import and shipping fees make them all but...
Are you interested in breeding them or just enjoying them? If breeding I would look for Hippocampus erectus, if just for enjoyment I would say H. reidi. In the 30 cube I would start off with 2 horses.
Both holes should be the same size IIRC. They are drilled for 1" bulkheads. AGA sends one 1" bulkhead for the drains and the other is a universal that is the same size as the 1" but the inside hole is 3/4". If that makes any sense.
These magnets only have 16.65 ponds of pull force. Haven't tried to see how much they will hold. I can try it and see. I have various sizes of LR rubble I can play with.
I am getting some 3/4" epoxy coated as soon as they get them back in stock. They have 33.85 lbs of pull force.
If they are not coated they can not be used in saltwater. You will need to coat them in some sort of epoxy or coating that will seal them from contacting the SW.
Well this was my first attempt at making these so figured I'd chronicle it here.
The magnets I purchased already epoxy coated as it was cheaper than buying the materials and doing it myself.
These are the magnets I ordered:

Here they are when they arrived.
