    Superbowl Commercials

Here are my picks for the Superbowl commercials. Note that I missed about half the game/commercials because I was in the kitchen. GUT LAUGHING FUNNY - The Dale Call SWEET AND LOVING - Cheerios, the Puppy TECHNICAL - Pepsi's Halftime Intro Which ones floated your boat?

    skimmer pump need help

Olivier, I believe you have an H&S skimmer. HERE is the RC site that specifically talks about this skimmer. I'm not going to read all these, but a quick skim looks like people have mod'ed the skimmer to fit other pumps. Good luck.

Lionfish Stomach Contents Reveal Massive Appetite

I know this is bit of a hijack, but where is the poison on the Lionfish...is it only in the tips of its fins? I'm assuming it's not like that poisonous puffer that they eat in Japan that has to be prepared by a certified chef.

Some Corals are dying off. Others are growing.

As you state, the MAG is high, but fortunately that high a level isn’t that damaging. Bring it down by water changes….assuming that high level didn’t come from the salt brand you are using. Your ALK is a bit low. Dependant on who you talk to, you want to target 7 – 11 dKH. Take note of...

Has Anyone considered using our Ocean"s Water???

Good question Joe. The simple answer, the average salinity of the ocean is 35 ppt. However, if you look at a map of the world, you will see how salinity differs around the world. In addition, the salinity also changes in depth, as seen here: And my final answer, the salt...

    Zip’s 90 – ver.2.0

Dave, sorry about the mishap. Just an FYI, acrylic actually slightly swells when put in water...so that added to the tight fit and probably was why it eventually snapped.

    RODI + Hot water

It most likely is OK. If you would like, and the tubing you have is 1/4 inch, I can bring over my in-line tds meter and check it out. Let me know. Paul

How can they let this happen?

I would imagine that Australia has the same issues with their dredge material as we have here.....it's heavily contaminated with nasty stuff. As an example, the Army Corp of Engineers has been trying to dredge the Raritan River for years. They once again have posted for companies to supply...

    Copperbands

Jim, FYI, the rinsing of food to eliminate phosphate is a myth. I'll see if I can quickly find the link that explains rinsing food being a waste of time. EDIT TO ADD: Found it HERE. If you don't want to read all the chemistry crap, go about 2/3 the way down to, "Rinsing Foods and the...

    Superbowl Prediction

My Superbowl prediction is that this will be the first and last cold weather game. It seems that so many of the events have been a bust and that now game tickets and hotel prices are dropping because of lack of interest. I also think there is an issue in venue location (in New Jersey) and...

    Dan's 150 Rebuild

Unacceptable! No metal. I looked up 1 1/2 Conduit clamps in my area of New Jersey, and they all had loads in stock. Go to the electrical department and look for THESE.

    Copperbands

I've tried Copperbands twice, and I refuse to kill another fish. Both ate at the LFS, but once I got them home, no dice. They starved to death....and I tried everything...mysis, blackworms, you name it. I don't know what I did wrong, because I know some who have had no problem with them...

    Reef safe cement?

I kicked around the though of making my own out of ceramic since I also have a kiln. There are a bunch of posts that specifically tell you how to make the molds to do this. After some thought, and considering the cost of electricity to fire up the kiln, i nixed the idea. I also kicked...

How many f you run a uv light

Will/Ethan, thanks for the reply. I agree about mis-information. I certainly do not question whether or not UV can kill ich…..it certainly can at the proper dose. However, most units sold do not produce the effective dose to kill…..some sites suggesting 9W units for 125 gallon tanks….and...

How many f you run a uv light

I need to preface my comments by clearly stating that I do not mean for this to be confrontational. I speak with great ignorance in that I’m fortunate to have never had marine ich, and I don’t run a UV sterilizer. I do own one, but it’s not hooked up. So my comments are to generate...

How many f you run a uv light

The "typical" UV units that are sold for our tanks do not generate enough energy to kill ich. They are designed to kill bacteria, not protozoa. Need something in the area of 10 times more powerful to kill ich over bacteria.
