    Inherited 90

Sounds of Silence Switched out the old MRC 3 skimmer with a MAG 24, for an SWC 160 Xtreme Cone. The driving force behind the switch was energy consumption. The MAG 24 pulled a whopping 265 watts, while the SWC only pulls a measly 27 watts. I’m just hoping the SWC pulls the gunk like the...

    Aquavitro salinity users

It’s precipitated calcium carbonate. To minimize carbonate precipitation, two recommendations: 1. Always have the full volume of water when mixing salt. That is, don’t make a salt concentrate that is later diluted out to the correct salinity. The higher alc/calc concentrations will cause...

    Conservation of Energy

OK, now back to those of us who have the Atman 2500…..I’ve read a bunch of posts and let me summarize my findings. I actually now have three impellers, and upon very close inspection, found that two are exactly alike, and one is slightly different. The slightly different one has an...

    Plumbing plan

Flex PVC is made to be glued. Any clamp will not work. It is sized to fit into standard PVC fittings with cleaner and glue. If you want to use clamps, use tubing!

    Conservation of Energy

Well this is most interesting. Both Mike and George have a BM NAC7, but one has a needle wheel and the other has a mesh wheel. I thought I read that BM came with a needle wheel….George, did you buy your skimmer new or could the previous own have mod’ed the skimmer with this mesh wheel...

    Conservation of Energy

If I’m not mistaken, the Atman 2500 on the BM uses the pinwheel while the Atman on the SWC has a custom mesh wheel, and it’s this mesh wheel that has been the cause of snapped impellers.

    Conservation of Energy

I’m having second thoughts about my Valentine’s gift I just bought myself. (What can I say, I love myself! :love_heart: ) Anyway, I just bought an SWC 160 xtreme cone skimmer. What scares me are the posts I’m now reading about the pump….the Atman 2500….and the problems with the mesh wheel...

    Plumbing plan

Flex PVC can be handled just like rigid PVC......just go a little light with the cleaner. As far a pipe straps suggested by George above, very good idea, but instead of the metal ones, use the plastic (PVC) ones that are used for conduit. EDIT TO ADD: I know some HD's and Lowe's carry flex...

Nope, no Beagles.....but if you're looking for a Kerry Blue Terrier, I've got a connection.

    Bulkhead drip woes

I’m first going to jump to the assumption that you have rigid PVC pipe. If that is the case, the first thing that came to my feeble little mind was that there is torque on the pipe that is causing the bulkhead to leak. I would check this first. And I apologize for suggestion number two, but...

Brandon's you were right 75g upgrade

“One word young man: Plastics!” Looking good Brandon. I think this plastics thing might just catch on. I’ve been saving up my doll hairs and should have enough doll hairs to buy that plastic shelf unit too.

    Uneven floor

Ah you young people today, always taking the easy way out. Unbolt your house from the foundation and jack up the house and shim the foundation.   :o You don’t need fancy shims….just buy the “standard” shim-pack from home depot. You get a bunch…maybe 20. If it’s a...

    300 Gallon upgrade

Rich, when I had freshwater tanks with store bought stands, I did not like how low they were. I would build risers using 2 x 6 dimensional lumber…..just like it was a joisted floor. These will hold a ton. You can finish it so it looks just like the stand. Here’s one of my old tanks (a 75)...

An enkmat! READ MAN! EDIT TO ADD: I believe they meant enkamat. HERE's an example on ebay.

    Going insane with overflow

I’m pretty sure Brandon has two 700 gph kits. Each kit has a single 1 ½ line to drain to the sump. So he effectively has the capacity of 1400 gph. I don’t think it’s a supply problem like you’re suggesting. I think it’s a plumbing problem….something just not set up right, or with the best...

    ever plugged a tank?

Another smart reefer! You will be very happy with the Glass-Holes overflow. Extremely well made, good value and the best part is that they take up very little real estate. I assume when you say the double drain Glass-Holes you mean the 1500 gph kit? That’s what I have on my 90 and...

    Going insane with overflow

Jonathan, you have my curiosity….what do you mean you “added the tube.” I thought all Glass-Holes overflows came with this tube in the 90 elbow at the bulkhead??? We are talking Glass-Holes, aren’t we? My elbows were already drilled….and I would think that if the tube wasn’t there, water...

    Randy's 2 part supplements

Dow Flakes are tough to find. I had a bag, and can only guess that it was used to melt snow. So I found Prestone’s Driveway Heat, and I’ve been using that. I found both Driveway Heat and Mag Flakes at a True Value Hardware store….but it was a couple years ago. Note that you need less...
