When it's hot out beards are in!

A super is an individual box that stacks on top of others. The term super is short for "superior" to any other method at the time to keep bees. They are also called Langstroth boxes, based on Lorenzo Langstroth who is considered the father of beekeeping and in the 1800's discovered what we call...

    my tank overheated pls help!!!

Not one to know from experience. I would rely on water changes as you may get a cycle with a microbe die off due to temp increase and if you dip you may put them over the edge. Water changes, water changes, see how they recover. What kind of heater do you have, may be time to invest in a upgrade.

When it's hot out beards are in!

It's not as easy as it was over a decade ago. I sell to replace or support the bees, when you sell then it's a business and for me looses the enjoyment factor. I used to maintain about 25 hives and 20 nucs. Produced anywhere from 1500 to 2000 lbs. now with 2 small kids I do not have the time to...

When it's hot out beards are in!

Been keeping bees for years, you know when they are in a good mood or not. That evening they were pretty calm and for a hive their personality is not overly aggressive. I do get stung, but its not that bad and I'm so used to the venom it amounts to a mosquito bite. I love watching them, quite...

When it's hot out beards are in!

With all this scorching humidity and heat bees will hang outside to maintain the hive temp. This is actually called bearding and this hive has about 60,000 individuals. All packed in and the hive overheats so some stay out while others inside fan their wings profusely while suspending a drop of...

    hammer and frogspawn

These are almost "bullet-proof" hammers as they have survived the heat of a nyc subway ride, and the cold lack of power of Hurricane Sandy... i should rename name to Limited Edition Disaster Proof Hammers.... 1+

    Back to basics

John, I have conversed with you as we'll on this topic. In my DT I think I had alk swings as the culprit. When i added a lot more acro frags i think they upset the 2 part regiment i had and caused me to start to add more resulting in some swingd from 8 to 9.9. Been feeding more to increase...

    Zippys tank

Thanks Jim, I am manually dosing with BRS part. About 6 weeks ago I had the most amazing color, even with my ability to keep alk at no greater than 8 while maintaining mag and calcium. So got the motion after seeing other systems to slowly raise it as others seem to keep theirs at 9 or higher...
