do you think it would be less effective if I put carbon in a filter bag, and put the bag in a media reactor? I was thinking to do this so that it would be easier to change out the media monthly, but not sure if by doing that, I reduce the effectiveness of the carbon.
If you have an oregon tort that has really nice blue coloration, where do u keep in with respect to your lighting/flow?
I have one but the blue isn't coming out for me. I have it high-light/medium flow.
IMO, a bulb is only as good as the ballast that's driving it. Check out Sanjay's web site, and you'll see the variations in PAR output for the same bulb using different ballasts.

An ARO 250watt ballast at hellolights is $99. The...
Austin, the deltec model suggests to stir the kalkwasser mix 24x7. Is this how you run it at your work? Curious as to whether running it this way causes any kalk to enter the sump.
If you're planning to DIY your lighting and canopy, look into Lumenarc III reflectors. If I could do it over again I would use these. I took the cheap route when I did it, and now regret it. Over a 58 gal you'd only need one.
I'd also recommend going with the 250watt ballast. The difference in...
your posted nitrate levels are 20ppm, and you have 9 fish in your 75gal, most of which are on the large side. I'm curious as to why the general consensus is leaning towards too low nutrient levels? 20ppm nitrates is actually on the high-side.
My guess is not enough lighting/old lighting for...
make sure you write a review of it after a few months so that when I'm ready to get one it'll be an easier decision. With all the people buying at this time, it's a great way to see if the pumps burning out is a real problem or just a marketing trick.
I have a few in my 75gal and they don't touch my corals. They haven't eaten any aiptasia either, but that's a different story :)
There are camelback shrimps that kinda sorta (ish) look like peppermints, but those aren't reef safe.
good reasons for a magnetic stirrer -
1. 2 year warranty on the stirrer (if you buy from a good brand)
2. uses less power
3. you can control the speed of the stirrer (models that have microprocessors)
It's about $100 difference between a good magnetic stirrer model, and a powerhead model. I...
being that Phosguard is aluminum oxide, is it a good idea to use in a tank that already has livestock? I've read that these types of products can increase aluminum levels in the tank and irritate corals. Thought it would be safer to use GFO in tanks with coral inhabitants.
Tom, what T5 bulbs do you use? I have 175w iwasaki's too, and just getting ready to add 4x54watt T5 retros. Looking to see what bulb combinations are working for you.
Bring a camera and notepad. Phyl and John don't have a reef tank, they have a reef SYSTEM. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see their basement...
as long as the ingredient is Cyanoacrylate, you're ok to use it. I use the superglue brand. Make sure you use gel, cause it sure is messy if you don't.
To expand on the discussion...PowerHead or Magnetic stirrer?
The main gripe I've heard about using PHs to mix the kalk is that because the powder is flowing thru the PH, it'll clog and cease up eventually.
Also, how often do you schedule the mixing pump to turn on throughout the day?
I've got coral envy :o
Is pic 7 and 9 of the same purple monster? I ask because pic 7 is deep purple, and pic 9 shows some white in the core of the colony.
