Pete, thx for clearing that up...I got the Extreme and Xtreme skimmers mixed up. I was originally looking at the Xtreme models, since they are more similar to the ATI bubble-masters which were my original option, but PA stopped carrying them. The SICCE pump touts 1000 L/H of air at only 30watts...
That's what turned me off ... the fact that they say it can be run externally using a feed pump, but it's NOT a recirc skimmer. If you look at the design, octo added a barbed-input to the sicce pump where you would feed the sump water to the skimmer. So you would be using a pump to feed directly...
pete - r u planning to setup the extreme internal or external to your sump? Curious how it will perform externally, considering that they are modeled after the ATI bubble-masters, which are known to require a dead steady water level in your sump.
hoping not to hijack this thread, but I've been thinking about adding a calcium reactor but been holding off until I build a Kalk stirrer to complement it. Curious about Ken's setup....you don't add any kalkwasser at all? I'm relatively new to this hobby, but I read that the effluent coming from...
in-sump skimmers are sensitive to the water level they sit in. Depending on the skimmer you're using, you'll need to take that into account. e.g., ATI skimmers need to be in 6-8in of water, so if your skimmer section was 13in high, you'd have to build a 5-7 inch stand. Also if you're planning to...
Did you measure again an hour or so after adding the RO water? I would think it would take some time for the RO water with lower SG to thoroughly mix with the salt water in your tank, especially 300 gal. I know whenever I top off, i get different readings from if I were to wait a few hours and...
top quality livestock, and great prices on drygoods. If you're going to pick up any corals/fish, make sure you get there early because the good stuff sells quickly. FYI, they just started their 25% off year-end sale.
here's a good article I bookmarked about Millis. http://www.reefs.org/library/aquarium_net/1096/1096_2.html
According to the article, the long hair-like tentacles aren't the polyps, they are actually stingers, so be careful. Milli's don't have visible polyps.
As for your tank, how much flow do...
Maybe a fireworm? http://marinebio.org/species.asp?id=292
Now I'm staring at my tank looking for signs of any other coral being affected...
I QTd the palys, but they don't look so good. Hopefully I removed it soon enough before it spreads to my other colonies.
If it's bacterial, I will skim...
This weekend I noticed my 15polyp group of devil's armour palys were looking strange. the mouths were fully opened on all of them. Yesterday and this morning they all look shriveled, and about 5 polyps were "melted" away. All my other zoos/palys/corals are doing fine. Couldn't see any evidence...
Both are nice sumps, but they're both made from 1/4in acrylic. For that price range, I would suggest contacting RichT for a custom build. The frag-swap-sump he built is being sold for $295 and he used 3/8in acrylic. That's the route I'll be using once I figure out what skimmer I'm upgrading to.
The high Nitrates may be due to your heavy bioload..you're pretty stocked with big eaters and poopers in your 120. Carlo once recommended to me a Seachem product - Matrix. It's a biological product, which is why I went with it. I didn't have problem with trates but I must say that after putting...
Hmm..looked like a sargassum to me. I know cross-hatch triggers are planktivores, but sargassum's I thought are hit&miss when it comes to harming inverts.
Been reading that some people mount their MH bulbs perpendicular to the length of the tank, instead of parallel. The posts state they get better light distribution when it's perpendicular. Anyone out there do this and actually see better results?
I have a retrofit 4ft reflector from HelloLights...
thx. I understand that MHs have narrower broadcast, which is why reflectors are so important. I have a diy reflector from hello-lights. I also supplement my lighting with 4x96watt PCs (2 actinics and 2 67Ks).
The discoloration seems to be specific with certain colors. My green digi is brown on...
I guess it could be my bulbs...just doesn't really make sense to me. I have new bulbs coming this week, guess I'll see soon enough. My bulbs are 6 and 11 months old (bought used retrofits that's why the age is so different). I run 2x15K Iwasaki's 7hrs a day.
What's a good rule of thumb to tell...
I accidentally broke a few branches off of my Digis while cleaning, and I noticed that for those branches that started growing more horizontal, the underside of the branches are brown. Same goes for my green/purple rim cap...it's starting to develop whirls, but since the whirls overlap and are...
