in terms of gpd - i went with a 75 (option for 100 on the unit). The 75 provides slightly higher rejection rates so you get slightly better quality water. I use a typhoon 3 from airwaterice. I would not bypass the softner. I don't personally.

unfortunately with skimmers - the "get what you pay for" motto applies. Though at macna we learned that spending four digits on a skimmer may not really buy you that much more over a 3 digit dollar skimmer. might be time to consider buying a new skimmer...
